Abstract

The book ‘Skeletal Muscle – From Myogenesis to Clinical Relations’ offers a wide range of topics related to the skeletal muscle morphology and function. Chapters deal with the process of myogenesis and the regeneration of skeletal muscle as well as the morphological and functional changes on the effect of exercise or disuse. Implementation of molecular biology techniques in the investigations reveals new perspective in the understanding of skeletal muscle disorders. The deeper exploration of the neuromuscular signal transduction and modification offers more stable basis for clinical interventions. The section ‘Clinical relations’ highlights the background of altered muscle function in some types of myopathies and diabetes mellitus. The book is recommended to scientists, clinicians and students in the field of medical and health sciences as well as the readers who are interested in the proliferation and differentiation processes.

Abstract

A healthy skeletal musculature is necessary for a good quality of life and is important in sports. The loss of skeletal muscle mass leads to severe clinical complications and alters daily functioning. The aim of this book is to give an overview of skeletal muscle atrophy including pathomechanism, clinical characters, and the tools for prevention and treatment. Skeletal muscle atrophy can develop due to neurogenic or myogenic reasons, and frequently appears as an age-dependent disorder (sarcopenia). The studies of theoretical background give promising perspectives to prevent and treat muscle atrophy. The book is recommended to scientists, practitioners, students, sportsmen, and everybody who is interested in the normal and impaired function of the skeletal muscle.

Abstract

Sarcopenia is a symptom of aging that contributes to the functional decline of the musculoskeletal system, responsible for impaired gait and balance and a high risk of falls and serious fractures. Nutrition and exercise play a key role in the prevention and treatment of sarcopenia. Due to the multifaceted nature of sarcopenia, the best therapeutic approach is multidisciplinary, requiring collaboration between specialists such as geriatricians, internists, physiatrists, general practitioners, nutritionists, and physiotherapists. This book presents a comprehensive overview of sarcopenia with chapters on physiopathological mechanisms, assessment tools, and rehabilitation activities of the condition in the frail elderly.
