Abstract

Nematodes are microscopic, eel-like roundworms that can infect humans, animals, and plants and cause serious damage and yield losses in a wide range of crops worldwide. This book includes thirteen chapters that address such topics as diagnosing nematode infections in crops (fruits and horticultural crops), management and biological control of plant-parasitic nematodes, biological indicators of nematodes, and entomopathogenic and marine nematodes. This comprehensive volume is a useful resource for students, teachers, researchers, field workers, and all those interested in and working with nematodes.

Abstract

Soil Nematodes of Grasslands in Northern China presents research on China's temperate grasslands, providing the findings and results of a large field survey along a transect across the northern temperate grassland. It examines nematode distribution patterns along the transect from trophic group and family, to genus level, also evaluating their relationship with climatic conditions, plant biomass and soil parameters. The book then presents detailed taxonomy information of nematodes to genus or species level, providing keen insights into nematode diversity along the grassland transect in north China. Final sections review the advances and perspectives for the research of soil ecology on soil nematodes in China, including recent major discoveries of soil microbial diversity and eco-function during this field survey. This work will help researchers predict the impact of global change drivers on below ground soil biota and better understand the functioning and services they provide in terrestrial ecosystems. Features previously unavailable information on nematode diversity and distribution along a large geographic region of ChinaDescribes the relationship of nematode assemblage composition with climatic conditions, plant and soil characteristicsCovers nematode genera and species descriptions along the grassland transect.

Abstract

Nematodes are one of the most important pests globally and can cause up to 14% loss of food crops. In total, nematodes cause over USD 100 billion in global crop damage annually. To date, only a few thousand PPN species have been described. Nematode identification has traditionally relied on morphological and anatomical characters using light microscopy and, in some cases, scanning electron microscopy (SCN). Lately, integrative studies combining molecular diagnosis with morphology and taxonomy have been used to accurately identify and describe nematode species. Detailed analyses of morphological and molecular data have both significantly contributed to our overall understanding of the dynamic and complex nature of plant-nematode interactions. This book includes eleven chapters that cover different aspects of nematology research, from classical morphology and taxonomy to DNA analysis and phylogeny. It also includes very useful information on the rapid detection of plant-parasitic nematodes.

Abstract

Volume 8 in the series, appearing in two parts, A and B, deals with the systematics of cyst nematodes of the subfamily Heteroderinae. Cyst nematodes are important pathogens causing extensive damage and significant yield loss to many crops in both temperate and tropical regions. Part A presents summarised information on various aspects of morphology, biology, ecology, pathology, biogeography, control measures and diagnostics of these nematodes. Molecular diagnostic tables and comprehensive tabular and dichotomous keys for species identification, together with descriptions of protocols for extraction, light and electron microscopy studies, and molecular diagnostics are also included. The taxonomic section of part A provides diagnoses for six genera, viz ., Globodera , Punctodera , Cactodera , Dolichodera , Betulodera and Paradolichodera , and includes descriptions and morphometrics of 30 valid species. The work is illustrated by 101 drawings and photographs The genus Heterodera is mainly covered in part B, complete descriptions and morphometrics of the 80 known valid species being provided and the species illustrated by 159 line drawings and photographs Identification of the species using morphological and molecular techniques is also covered. Each part includes an extensive bibliography.

Abstract

Plant-parasitic nematodes (PPNs) are economically important pests for numerous agriculture and forestry crops, representing a significant constraint on global food security and forestry health. Root knot nematodes (Meloidogyne spp.), potato cyst nematodes (Globodera spp.), and root lesion nematodes (Pratylenchus spp.) are some examples of PPNs that are ranked at the top in the list of the most economically and scientifically important species. Current approaches to controlling these PPNs include the use of nematicides, but many pose serious concerns for human health and the environment. To cope with such threats, accurate diagnostic methods for nematode detection and a deep understanding of nematode infection processes, as well as of their intricate relationships with the host plants, are crucial for the development of effective integrated nematode management programs. This Special Issue entitled "Pant Parasitic Nematodes" is a collection of 11 original papers that cover a wide range of topics, including the state of the art of important PPN, and the detection and management of PPNs through sustainable and eco-friendly strategies.

Abstract

In Advances in Entomopathogenic Nematode Taxonomy and Phylogeny the numerous species of Steinernema and Heterorhabditis described since the previous volume, published in 2007, are evaluated and discussed. Valid species proposed from 2007-2015 are covered in detail, each taxon having an illustrated diagnostic description and additional data on molecular characterisation, distribution and biology, etc . An addendum gives brief details of species proposed during 2016. An overview of the taxonomy of the two families provides an up-to-date list of species for both genera, including new synonyms and detailed commentary on specific status where appropriate. Tabular keys to all valid species of Steinernema and Heterorhabditis assist in diagnostics. A chapter on phylogeny and phylogeography completes the book.

Abstract

This book explores the role of nematodes and nematode antagonistic bioagents in agricultural settings. It addresses the challenges posed by plant parasitic nematodes, which cause significant economic losses. The text details strategies for nematode management, focusing on biological control methods as an alternative to harmful chemical nematicides. It emphasizes the use of beneficial microbes, such as bacteria, fungi, and actinomycetes, for their nematicidal activities and plant growth promotion. The book is structured in two parts: the first part covers the isolation, molecular formulations, and shelf life of beneficial bioagents, while the second part discusses mass culturing and field applications of nematodes against insect pests. It is aimed at researchers, scholars, and professionals in the fields of nematology, agricultural pathology, and entomology.
