Abstract

Nanomaterials and nanotechnology are new fields of science and technology. Fundamentally, nanotechnology is about manipulating and making materials at the atomic and molecular levels. It is expected that nanotechnology will change solid-state gas sensing dramatically and will probably gain importance in all fields of sensor application over the next 10 to 20 years. Nanotechnology is still in its infancy, but the field has been a hot area of research globally since a few years ago. It has been found that with reduction in size, novel electrical, mechanical, chemical, catalytic, and optical properties can be introduced. As a result, it has been concluded that one-dimensional structures will be of benefit for developing new-generation chemical sensors that can achieve high performance. Therefore, in the last decade, the study of 1-D materials has become a primary focus in the field of chemical sensor design. Synthesis of new nano objects and exploitation of their extraordinary properties is the goal and dream of many researchers engaged in the field of sensor design. In addition, it has also been established that 1-D structures may be ideal systems in which to study the nature of chemical sensing effects.

Abstract

Due to their unique size-dependent physicochemical properties, nanostructured thin films are used in a wide range of applications from smart coating and drug delivery to electrocatalysis and highly-sensitive sensors. Depending on the targeted application and the deposition technique, these materials have been designed and developed by tuning their atomic-molecular 2D- and/or 3D-aggregation, thickness, crystallinity, and porosity, having effects on their optical, mechanical, catalytic, and conductive properties. Several open questions remain about the impact of nanomaterial production and use on environment and health. Many efforts are currently being made not only to prevent nanotechnologies and nanomaterials from contributing to environmental pollution but also to design nanomaterials to support, control, and protect the environment. This Special Issue aims to cover the recent advances in designing nanostructured films focusing on environmental issues related to their fabrication processes (e.g., low power and low cost technologies, the use of environmentally friendly solvents), their precursors (e.g., waste-recycled, bio-based, biodegradable, and natural materials), their applications (e.g., controlled release of chemicals, mimicking of natural processes, and clean energy conversion and storage), and their use in monitoring environment pollution (e.g., sensors optically- or electrically-sensitive to pollutants)

Abstract

In 2018, the International Symposium on Nanogeoscience was held in Guiyang, China. Scholars from around the globe gathered to discuss recent progress and development trends in various aspects of nanogeoscience, including nanomineralogy. Nanomineralogy, an important aspect of nanogeoscience, focuses on the composition, structure, and physical and chemical properties of nanoscale minerals and their interrelations with other Earth critical components. To give a sampling of the latest progress in nanomineralogy and related fields, we offer this Special Issue, which describes a full range of recent nanomineralogic achievements relating to everything from nanominerals and geochemistry, mineral nanostructures, and nanomineral deformation, to nanopores in oil and gas reservoirs, nanomineral deposits, and nanomineral material. Today, nanomineralogy faces a new strategic opportunity as well as a revolutionary challenge. We thus present this special nanomineralogy-focused issue of Minerals with the aim of encouraging our colleagues to familiarize themselves with current developments, trends, and directions in nanomineralogy, enabling an understanding of the potential of the field as a whole. We look forward to developing further scientific research and cooperation in nanomineralogy, hoping thereby to attract and guide young scholars to participate in this field.
