Beleko is a small village in the West African state of Mali. In the book's twenty-five chapters we meet Dutch development workers, French missionaries and Malian public service workers, health workers, farmers, village women and their children. All of these characters strive in their different ways to give meaning to their lives as their paths cross in the daily village life of Africa at the end of the 1980s. As each character tells his or her own story, we learn of their backgrounds, their passions and their struggles -- and how they influence each other in decisive ways.

This report examines the prospects for stabilization in Mali following the political and military crisis that began in 2012. To this end, it examines Mali's peace settlements since the early 1990's to identify flaws and successes. The report also explores whether Mali's neighbor Niger owes its current stability to a more favorable context, shrewd policies, or sheer luck, and whether it might offer a model of resilience for Mali.

First published in London in 1816, The Narrative of Robert Adams is an account of the adventures of Robert Adams, an African American seaman who survives shipwreck, slavery, and brutal efforts to convert him to Islam, before being ransomed to the British consul. In London, Adams is discovered by the Company of Merchants Trading which publishes his story, into which Adams inserts a fantastical account of a trip to Timbuctoo. Adams's story is accompanied by contemporary essays and notes that place his experience in the context of European exploration of Africa at the time, and weigh his credibility against other contemporary accounts. Professor Adams's introduction examines Adams's credibility in light of modern knowledge of Africa and discusses the significance of his story in relation to the early nineteenth century interest in Timbuctoo, and to the literary genres of the slave narrative and the Barbary Captivity narrative.

Common narratives about development in Africa miss the critical technological work of women. Twagira's study instead positions Malian women as rural engineers whose strategic planning and labor over the course of the twentieth century assured their food security.

In this work the author seeks to deal with interpretations about madness from the perspective of Dogon society, a black African society in West Africa. Through tales that have been transmitted for several generations, we have a set of stories that show how this society seeks to resolve a situation that, often, brings with it an emerging pain that needs to be explained and treated. In Itineraries of Madness in Dogon Territories, we can see how a society deals with such a delicate subject in such a unique way. In this way, by bringing issues related to the mental health of its individuals, the work contributes, showing us several notes that aim to reflect on a subject as difficult to be approached as madness and its implications in individual and social life. 2005 Jabuti Award:
