Het fenomeen ‘leven’ is onlosmakelijk verbonden met de aanwezigheid van een aantal bijzondere chemische stoffen: de biomoleculen. Zonder de wisselwerking tussen deze biomoleculen, het hoofdthema van de biochemie, is er geen leven. De wisselwerking is het gevolg van hun structuur, die hun functie dicteert. Het begrijpen van structuur-functierelaties van biomoleculen, en van eiwitten in het bijzonder, is dan ook essentieel om inzicht te krijgen in de complexiteit van verschillende levensnoodzakelijke processen in organismen. Verstoring van biochemische processen leidt tot ziekte. De structuurniveaus van eiwitten worden in extenso behandeld en gradueel gekoppeld aan hun functie (en aan de regulatie ervan). Dat culmineert in een hoofdstuk waarin biochemische concepten en mechanismen gekaderd worden in de context van biologische processen of toepassingen: de bloedstolling, de werking van een antibioticum, actinegestuurde celmigratie en vertering. Er wordt aandacht besteed aan ziektebeelden en andere medisch relevante onderwerpen. Dit boek bespreekt de basisaspecten van de biochemie.
