Abstract

Sources of Value is a comprehensive guide to financial decision making suitable for beginners as well as experienced practitioners. It treats financial decision making as both an art and a science and proposes a comprehensive approach through which companies can maximise their value. Beginners will benefit from its initial financial foundation section which builds strong basic skills. Practitioners will enjoy the new insights which the eponymous Sources of Value technique offers - where values come from and why some companies can expect to create it while others cannot. The book also introduces several other techniques which, together, spell out how to combine strategy with valuation and an understanding of accounts to make a fundamental improvement in the quality of corporate financial decision taking. Sources of Value is written in a readable conversational style and will appeal to those already working in companies as well as those studying on a business course.

Abstract

Protected marine species have populations that are depleted, decreasing, or are at-risk of extinction or local extirpation. As of 2015 The International Union for the Conservation of Nature, a global environmental organization, lists approximately 737 marine species worldwide that are considered at risk of extinction. Many are provided legal protection through national laws requiring research and management measures aimed at recovering and maintaining the species at a sustainable population level. Integral to the policy decision process involving the management and recovery of marine species is the consideration of trade-offs between the economic and ecological costs and benefits of protection. This suggests that economics, at its core the study of trade-offs, has a significant role.

Abstract

This Pivot book focuses on both the essentials of asset management and current industry trends, specifically the development from an active management approach to a focus on ESG investments. The first part of the book outlines the dynamics that have traditionally characterised the asset management industry, including the distinction between active and passive portfolio management, the emergence of Exchange Traded Funds (EFTs) which have dominated portfolio allocation over the last 25 years, and the growth of the factor investing approach. It then explores how ESG principles have evolved into a primary focus for investors over the last few years, and how the growing importance placed on the establishment of homogeneous ESG criteria across companies now involves investors and asset managers as well as regulators. The final section of the book considers climate finance as a new challenge for asset management, which insists on portfolio choices that aim to mitigate the effects of climate change. This book offers new perspectives on the academic debate around differing investment philosophies as well as offering an empirical analysis of ESG benchmarks used across the industry. It will be of interest to academics and practitioners in finance and banking broadly, including those working in climate finance, investment behaviour, and corporate governance. Enrica Bolognesi is an Associate Professor of Financial Markets and Intermediaries in the Department of Economics and Statistics of the University of Udine. She is the Director of the Bachelor’s and Master’s Degrees in Banking and Finance. Previously, she worked in the asset management industry as equity portfolio manager.

Abstract

Impact investing is a dynamic field that has been recently been discussed as a supplemental funding source for addressing societal problems. The topic has generated significant interest and is presumed to achieve significant growth rates for the coming years. Specifically, it covers the concept of impact investing within the broader field of social finance as well as the relevant (and new) actors, presents current financing instruments and the various tools to assess the impact of the investing strategy, and introduces valuation and fund modelling techniques which impact the investment decision of fund managers. This useful reference tool will be of interest to academics and researchers in the field of impact investing alongside students and practitioners in the space. Abstract

This book focuses on the valuation needed to apply IFRS (International Financial Reporting Standards), and provides coverage of financial instruments – indeed this is the starting point of the exposition. The book adopts a logical sequence where models of financial instruments are explained first and models of other assets (such as property, an enterprise, or multiple intangibles) are presented as extensions. The book uses mathematical notation in presenting many of the models, but the focus is on application rather than proof. The mathematics is presented at a level that assumes sufficient background in high school algebra and coordinate geometry, prior knowledge of elementary probability, and a knowledge of basic statistics. Readers should also be aware of what linear regression does and should be able to run a regression and interpret the output. Calculus is not assumed. The models discussed almost always require a computer to apply. However, the emphasis is on understanding the models rather than learning computer skills, especially in the case of financial instruments.

Abstract

We weigh every significant decision based on how it will affect our future. But when it comes to figuring that out, we mostly make the process up as we go along. While financial professional Peter Neuwirth can't help you actually predict the future, he can offer a simple, systematic way to make much better guesses about it-and so make better decisions.Neuwirth offers an accessible, step-by-step guide to using the powerful concept of Present Value-which allows you to determine the value today of something that might happen in the future-to evaluate all of the outcomes that might arise from choo

Abstract

This book aims at providing an empirical understanding of the main drivers affecting investors’ preferences in financing new ventures through equity crowdfunding (ECF) and determining fundraising campaign success. ECF is increasing in prominence as a route for new ventures in obtaining external financial resources. To raise capital, entrepreneurs are required to convey quality signals of their proposals with real-time information and knowledge sharing. This book advances knowledge in entrepreneurial finance by investigating the factors that affect individuals’ decisions to participate in ECF. The authors adopt a data mining approach to extract publicly available information from a multitude of crowdfunding platforms across different countries, producing a unique dataset. The book uses an innovative hybrid analysis to generate knowledge patterns creating data-driven models on one hand, and on the other test research hypotheses adopting statistical models to investigate empirical evidence in line, or in contrast, with the extant literature. The book also integrates organizational theories to examine the extent to which ECF platform managers follow a strategy of isomorphism in their choice of information disclosure. The final part of the book discusses how signals are interpreted by investors, how these affect financing preferences, and ultimately the successful completion of a fundraising campaign. The book will be of interest to academics and practitioners in entrepreneurial finance, FinTech, and investment behaviour. Francesco James Mazzocchini, Ph.D., is postdoctoral research fellow in Banking and Financial Markets at the Department of Management, Marche Polytechnic University – Italy. His scientific interests are in the fields of behavioural finance, decision-making under risk, FinTech, innovative financing, and entrepreneurial finance. Caterina Lucarelli is Full Professor of Banking and Financial Markets at the Department of Management, Marche Polytechnic University – Italy. Her scientific interests are in the fields of market microstructure, investors’ behaviour, decision-making under risk, gender diversity, entrepreneurship and sustainable finance. Abstract

Under the pressure of climate and social changes, agriculture is called to play a fundamental role in the world food challenge of the next few decades. A severe reduction of arable land and water scarcity combined with a growing food demand, changes in the dietary preferences in many countries and, more recently, a growing threat to food security and logistics from supply chains interruptions and global trade fragmentation, all require the implementation of processes, techniques, and innovations able to increase productivity and make a better use of scarce resources. Against this backdrop, a growing number of investors and asset managers have started looking at agriculture as an interesting investment theme to exploit the long-term strategic opportunities emerging from technological innovation and social changes. The industry is undergoing a process of transformation driven, on the one hand, by the emergence of new data and technologies that promise enhancing process efficiency and improve yields and, on the other hand, by an increased attention on the GHG emissions of agricultural processes and the impact of farmland on climate change, water and land scarcity. All these factors call for a radical rethinking of many agriculture business models. This book provides a detailed overview and analysis of those new technologies with the greatest potential to disrupt agriculture products and processes by improving productivity and the management of food loss and waste, making a more efficient and sustainable use of resources and enhancing food security. Then, it discusses the implications for investors and asset managers, starting with an assessment of the status quo of agriculture investing and providing a thorough description of the agriculture asset class with an emphasis on its distinctive characteristics and the innovations in the technological processes used in agriculture and farming with the greatest potential to obtain long-term sustainable returns.
