Every practicing physician, surgeon, advanced practice provider, and allied health professional interacts regularly with peer-reviewed literature: either while creating it, or consuming it. Despite the countless hours over many years spent in formal clinical training, many clinicians and clinician-authors lack advanced training or a working nuanced knowledge of research methodology and study design. Institutions have responded to this gap by reinforcing their ranks with statistical and methodological support in the form of data analysts, epidemiologists, and biostatisticians. However, clinicians are often unable to “talk the methodological talk” to guide them. This ultimately results in a stark disconnect between clinically relevant aspects of research and appropriate study design. Existing research methodology texts are largely written by statisticians, epidemiologists, and other academic public health experts. These are not easily digestible by practicing clinicians who need practical knowledge of this content to design their own research or enhance their understanding of the medical literature. Furthermore, these texts are often too detailed or “in the weeds” with regard to mathematics and statistical mechanics. Practical knowledge is not centrally located; rather, it is spread out among multiple books, articles, and other sources. This book is a concise, accessible, and practical guide for clinicians to read and reference when designing and reviewing clinical research. It is designed to be a standalone text, written “by a clinician, for clinicians” by a practicing clinical research expert who has had advanced formal training in research methodology, biostatistics, and epidemiology. Topics covered include descriptive and comparative statistics, power and sample size calculations, diagnostic tests, bias, and study design. In each chapter, consideration is given to study mechanics, advantages and disadvantages of each design, and illustrative analytical reviews of existing literature.

This book helps nursing students increase the quality of their clinical reasoning and therefore the quality of care. It teaches students to recognize when clinical reasoning is needed, and what reasoning is involved, and to avoid reasoning errors. This is important for nurses, since good quality of their clinical reasoning leads to a good quality of their decisions. Thus, it is directly connected to better nursing care. This volume is based on current knowledge about learning complex cognitive skills. From this knowledge, four sets of standard questions have been formulated that allow students to develop cognitive scripts for reasoning about diagnosis, etiology, prognosis, and interventions. Special attention is payed to diversity-sensitive reasoning in this English edition. From the 4C/ID model, a scientific educational whole task model for learning and developing and complex cognitive skills, complexity levels, learning tasks and subtask exercises are included. Learning clinical reasoning is supported with case videos. It consists of three parts: the first part, on clinical reasoning, is written for first- and second-year bachelor students in nursing. Part two, on evidence-based practice (EBP), is also suitable for later years. It teaches students to read and critically appraise scientific articles, and to assess whether they can be used in their own practice. Part three contains more in-depth information, extra explanations, examples, and material that teachers can use in a flexible way. The translation from Dutch to English was done with the help of artificial intelligence (machine translation by the service DeepL.com). The authors have subsequently revised the text further in an endeavour to refine the work stylistically.

Gilles de la Tourette Syndrome (TS) is a common, albeit severely under-diagnosed, neuropsychiatric disorder that is caused by a complex genetic basis, interacting with environmental factors. High comorbidity rates with other neurodevelopmental disorders such as attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder and obsessive compulsive disorder raise the intriguing hypothesis of a shared etiological background. Abnormalities of corticostriatal-thalamic-cortical circuits (CSTC) and dysfunction of both dopamine and serotonin neurotransmitter systems are assumed to be associated with TS. Recently, multiple lines of evidence also point towards an important role of additional neurotransmitters such as histamine and glutamate. For a very long time, efforts to elucidate the etiology and pathophysiology of TS have been fragmented and hampered by low statistical power. Finally, after more than two decades of active research aiming to identify the etiology and pathophysiology of TS, we are on the verge of a new era, promising exciting and rapid discoveries in the field. Investigators from around the world, representing multiple disciplines and scientific approaches, are joining their efforts in large-scale initiatives supported both by European Union and US National funding agencies, such as the European-funded EMTICS, TACTICS, and TSGeneSEE consortia, the Marie Curie Initial Training Network TS-EUROTRAIN and the European Society for the Study of TS joining forces with the NIH-funded TSAICG, GGRI, and Tic Genetics consortia. Importantly, all these initiatives are supported by TS patient support and advocacy groups. Multiple resources are being consolidated and coming together to serve the study of TS, including large well-characterized patient cohorts, and specialized epidemiological databases, such as the unique resource of the Netherlands Twin Register. This research topic showcases current large-scale collaborative efforts aiming to elucidate the genetic and neurobiological background of TS, through diverse approaches; from genomewide association studies aiming to identify common variants associated to the disorder to neuroimaging studies and animal models. Furthermore, current approaches on the clinical assessment and management of the disorder are presented. Propelled by the gradual availability of large scale TS cohorts, novel methodologies, and importantly, sheer enthusiasm by multiple researchers working together across different countries, the new era of the neurobiology of TS holds the promise to identify novel targets for improved therapies.
