The twin acts of singing and fighting for freedom have been inseparable in African American history. 'May We Forever Stand' tells an essential part of that story. In this rich, poignant, and readable work, Imani Perry tells the story of the black national anthem as it travelled from South to North, from civil rights to black power, and from countless family reunions to Carnegie Hall and the Oval Office.

"America the Beautiful," written in 1893 by Wellesley College English Professor and Poet, Katharine Lee Bates (1859-1929), revised and first published in 1895 and revised again in 1904 and 1911, stands among the classic pieces of American National hymnody. The poem reflects not only the natural grandeur of the United States in the late nineteenth century-from sky to earth, and from sea to another-but it depicts the ideal vision of a poet, writing only three decades removed from the American Civil War, who strived extremely hard to communicate to her readers the necessity to preserve the fundam

"For people of African descent, music constitutes a unique domain of expression. From traditional West African drumming to South African kwaito, from spirituals to hip-hop, Black life and history has been dynamically displayed and contested through sound. Shana Redmond excavates the sonic histories of these communities through a genre emblematic of Black solidarity and citizenship: anthems. An interdisciplinary cultural history, Anthem reveals how this "sound franchise" contributed to the growth and mobilization of the modern, Black citizen. Providing new political frames and aesthetic articulations for protest organizations and activist-musicians, Redmond reveals the anthem as a crucial musical form following World War I. Beginning with the premise that an analysis of the composition, performance, and uses of Black anthems allows for a more complex reading of racial and political formations within the twentieth century, Redmond expands our understanding of how and why diaspora was a formative conceptual and political framework of modern Black identity. By tracing key compositions and performances around the world--from James Weldon Johnson's "Lift Ev'ry Voice and Sing" that mobilized the NAACP to Nina Simone's "To Be Young, Gifted & Black" which became the Black National Anthem of the Congress of Racial Equality (CORE)--Anthem develops a robust recording of Black social movements in the twentieth century that will forever alter the way you hear race and nation. Shana L. Redmond is Assistant Professor of American Studies and Ethnicity at the University of Southern California. She is a former musician and labor organizer"--

"In the 1990s, Los Angeles was home to numerous radical social and environmental eruptions. In the face of several major earthquakes and floods, riots and economic insecurity, police brutality and mass incarceration, some young black Angelenos turned to holy hip hop--a movement merging Christianity and hip hop culture--to 'save' themselves and the city. Converting street corners to airborne churches and gangsta rap beats into anthems of praise, holy hip hoppers used gospel rap to navigate complicated social and spiritual realities and to transform the Southland's fractured terrains into musical Zions. Armed with beats, rhymes, and Bibles, they journeyed through black Lutheran congregations, prison ministries, African churches, reggae dancehalls, hip hop clubs, Nation of Islam meetings, and Black Lives Matter marches. Zanfagna's fascinating ethnography provides a contemporary and unique view of black LA, offering a much-needed perspective on how music and religion intertwine in people's everyday experiences."--Provided by publisher.

"What does music in Spain and Portugal reveal about the relationship between national and regional identity building? How do various actors use music to advance nationalism? How have state and international heritage regimes contributed to nationalist and regionalist projects? In this collection, contributors explore these and other essential questions from a range of interdisciplinary vantage points. The essays pay particular attention to the role played by the state in deciding what music represents Spanish or Portuguese identity. Case studies examine many aspects of the issue, including local recording networks, so-called national style in popular music, and music's role in both political protest and heritage regimes. Topics include the ways the Franco and Salazar regimes adapted music to align with their ideological agendas; the twenty-first century impact of Spain and Portugal on UNESCO's Intangible Cultural Heritage program; and the tensions that arise between institutions and community in creating and recreating meanings and identity around music"--
