This study examines, contextualizes, and evaluates the significance of contemporary Mexican filmmaking, focusing on the so-called 'cine nuevo' of 1989-1999. Accordingly, the study is divided into three sections, representing the key generic discourses that frame the films' narratives and underlying aims: The first analyzes contemporary Mexican cinema's re-presentation of history on the cinematic screen; the second part of the book examines the rise in the number of women directors, comparing it with the previous lack of female participation within the filmmaking arena; the last section explore

With the U.S. economy booming under President Bill Clinton and the cold war finally over, many Americans experienced peace and prosperity in the nineties. Digital technologies gained popularity, with nearly one billion people online by the end of the decade. The film industry wondered what the effect on cinema would be. The essays in American Cinema of the 1990's examine the big-budget blockbusters and critically acclaimed independent films that defined the decade. The 1990's' most popular genre, action, channeled anxieties about global threats such as AIDS and foreign terrorist attacks into escapist entertainment movies. Horror films and thrillers were on the rise, but family-friendly pictures and feel-good romances netted big audiences too. Meanwhile, independent films captured hearts, engaged minds, and invaded Hollywood: by decade's end every studio boasted its own "art film" affiliate.

Writing and Filming the Genocide of the Tutsis in Rwanda is a groundbreaking study that puts into dialogue testimonies, literary fictions, and cinematic representations bearing witness to the genocide of the Tutsis in Rwanda. The analysis of the narrative strategies used by survivors, authors, and filmmakers in their attempt to fulfill the duty to remember leads Dauge-Roth to explore the roles that communities and individuals must play in acknowledging survivors' radically different past and their present quest for a shared humanity.

The Power of Human Rights (published in 1999) was an innovative and influential contribution to the study of international human rights. At its center was a 'spiral model' of human rights change which described the various socialization processes through which international norms were internalized into the domestic practices of various authoritarian states during the Cold War years. The Persistent Power of Human Rights builds on these insights, extending its reach and analysis. It updates our understanding of the various causal mechanisms and conditions which produce behavioural compliance, and expands the range of rights-violating actors examined to include democratic and authoritarian Great Powers, corporations, guerrilla groups, and private actors. Using a unique blend of quantitative and qualitative research and theory, this book yields not only important new academic insights but also a host of useful lessons for policy-makers and practitioners.

It has been the dominant view that both Syria in the 1980's and Iran today have acted as rogue states in the Middle East threatening to upset the stability of the region. In this innovative new study, Anoushiravan Ehteshami and Raymond Hinnebusch show that these two countries have in fact acted in a rational fashion pursuing the aim of containing Western influence. This book demonstrates how Syrian foreign policy resembles the ""rational actor"" model and Iran's rational factions in government guide its diplomacy. Syria and Iran's foreign policies are shown to be conventional ones, of ""real...

Most party systems are relatively stable over time. Yet in the 1980's and 1990's, established party systems in Peru and Venezuela broke down, leading to the elections of outsider Alberto Fujimori and anti-party populist Hugo Chavez. Focusing on these two cases, this book explores the causes of systemic collapse. To date, scholars have pointed to economic crises, the rise of the informal economy, and the charisma and political brilliance of Fujimori and Chavez to explain the changes in Peru and Venezuela. This book uses economic data, surveys, and experiments to show that these...
