Abstract

The book collects the outcomes of the three Architectural Design Studios of the second year of the Bachelor degree course in Science of Architecture of the DiARC_ Department of Architecture of the University of Naples “Federico II” held during the academic year 2020/21.The three ateliers, sharing the same theme and place, worked on Naples and, in particular, within one of those parts – the Pignasecca – that make up its compact body, confronting the existing and taking it as a reference and measure for the contemporary project. On the basis of these premises, the publication is not limited to an orderly account of a teaching experience, but aims to be a testimony of convinced adhesion to the initiative of coordination of all the Studios of SSD ICAR/14-Architectural and Urban Composition at DiARC: to respond to the need to expand opportunities for comparison and dialogue and to reaffirm the centrality of the project in architectural studies La pubblicazione raccoglie gli esiti dei tre corsi di Laboratorio di Progettazione Architettonica del secondo anno del Corso di Laurea Triennale in Scienze dell’Architettura del DiARC_ Dipartimento di Architettura della Università di Napoli “Federico II” tenuti durante l’anno accademico 2020/21.I tre ateliers, che condividevano il tema e il luogo, hanno lavorato sulla città di Napoli e, in particolare, all’interno di una di quelle parti – la Pignasecca – che ne costituiscono il corpo compatto, confrontandosi con l’esistente e assumendolo come riferimento e misura per il progetto contemporaneo.

Abstract

This Special Issue “Recent Advances and Future Trends in Pavement Engineering” was proposed and organized to present recent developments in the field of innovative pavement materials and engineering. The 12 articles and state-of-the-art reviews highlighted in this editorial are related to different aspects of pavement engineering, from recycled asphalt pavements to alkali-activated materials, from hot mix asphalt concrete to porous asphalt concrete, from interface bonding to modal analysis, and from destructive testing to non-destructive pavement monitoring by using fiber optics sensors. This Special Issue partly provides an overview of current innovative pavement engineering ideas that have the potential to be implemented in industry in the future, covering some recent developments.

Abstract

Engineering practice requires the use of structures containing identical components or parts, useful from several points of view: less information is needed to describe the system, design is made quicker and easier, components are made faster than a complex assembly, and finally the time to achieve the structure and the cost of manufacturing decreases. Additionally, the subsequent maintenance of the system becomes easier and cheaper. This Special Issue is dedicated to this kind of mechanical structure, describing the properties and methods of analysis of these structures. Discrete or continuous structures in static and dynamic cases are considered. Theoretical models, mathematical methods, and numerical analyses of the systems, such as the finite element method and experimental methods, are expected to be used in the research. Machine building, automotive, aerospace, and civil engineering are the main areas in which such applications appear, but they are found in most engineering fields.

Abstract

This book illustrates the exciting possibilities being opened up by X-ray computed tomography (CT) to follow the behavior of materials under conditions as close as possible to those encountered during their manufacture or in operation. The scientific chapters selected for this book describe results obtained using synchrotron or laboratory devices during in situ or ex situ experiments. They characterize microstructures across length scales ranging from tens of nanometers to a few tens of micrometers. In this collection, X-ray CT shines a light on the mechanical properties of engineering materials, such as aluminum or magnesium alloys, stainless steel, aluminum, polymer composites, or ceramic foam. In these experiments, X-ray CT is able to image and quantify the damage occurring during tensile, compression, indentation, or fatigue tests.Of course, X-ray CT can illuminate the structure and behavior of natural materials too. Here it is applied to bone or natural snow to study their mechanical behavior, as well as materials from the agri-food sector. Its versatility is exemplified by analyses of topics as diverse as the removal of olive oil from kitchen sponges by squeezing and rinsing, to the effect of temperature changes on the structure of ice cream.

Abstract

Risk measures play a vital role in many subfields of economics and finance. It has been proposed that risk measures could be analysed in relation to the performance of variables extracted from empirical real-world data. For example, risk measures may help inform effective monetary and fiscal policies and, therefore, the further development of pricing models for financial assets such as equities, bonds, currencies, and derivative securities.A Special Issue of “Risk Measures with Applications in Finance and Economics” will be devoted to advancements in the mathematical and statistical development of risk measures with applications in finance and economics. This Special Issue will bring together the theory, practice and real-world applications of risk measures. This book is a collection of papers published in the Special Issue of “Risk Measures with Applications in Finance and Economics” for Sustainability in 2018.
