Abstract

"The multifarious and sometimes contested concept of "shamanism" has aroused intense popular and scholarly interest since its initial coinage by the Russian scholar V.M. Mikhailovsky in the late 19th century. In this book, three leading scholars, representing different branches of the humanities, dwell on the current status of shamanic practices and conceptions of the soul, both as 'etic' scholarly categories in historical research and as foci of spiritual revitalization among the indigenous populations of post-Soviet Siberia. Framed by an introduction and a critical afterword by historian of religions Ulf Drobin, the three essays address issues crucial to the understanding of cultural history and the history of religions. Marjorie Mandelstam Balzer, Research Professor in CERES, and the Department of Anthropology at the University of Georgetown, Jan N. Bremmer, professor emeritus and former Chair of Religious Studies at the Faculty of Theology and Religious Studies of the University of Groningen and Carlo Ginzburg at Scuola Normale Superiore di Pisa. The editor Peter Jackson, is Professor at the Department of Ethnology, History of Religions and Gender Studies at Stockholm University."

Abstract

This long awaited book discusses both ancient and modern shamanism, demonstrating its longevity and spatial distribution. The book is divided into eleven thought-provoking chapters that are organised into three sections: mind-body, nature, and culture. It discusses the clear associations with this sometimes little-understood ritualised practice, and asks what shamanism is and if tangible evidence can be extracted from a largely fragmentary archaeological record. The book offers a novel portrayal of the material culture of shamanism by collating carefully selected studies by specialists from three different continents, promoting a series of new perspectives on this idiosyncratic and sometimes intangible phenomenon.

Abstract

This scholarly work by Marek Aurel Havlíček explores the resurgence of Buryat shamanism in Southern Siberia and Northern Mongolia, with a focus on its historical and contemporary contexts. Based on extensive field research conducted between 2003 and 2009, the book examines the ethnic and religious identity of the Buryat people, analyzing the evolution of shamanistic practices and their revival after the decline during Soviet rule. The author aims to provide insights into the cosmology, rituals, and societal roles of Buryat shamans, while also addressing the broader concept of shamanism as understood in Western academic discourse. Targeted at scholars and readers interested in anthropology, religious studies, and ethnology, this book offers a detailed examination of Buryat cultural identity and the dynamic nature of shamanism today.
