From the Foreword-In a very short stretch of years, the Judaic Studies Program at the University of California, San Diego, has developed into one of the most important centers for teaching and research in biblical studies, in ancient Near Eastern and biblical archaeology, and more generally in Judaic studies. The program now rivals far older centers of study in these fields in eastern research universities. I have been an admirer of the program for some years, proud of former students of mine whose energy and foresight have contributed to the developments in La Jolla, including the establishment of endowed chairs that guarantee the future of this center and its program.This collection of essays honoring the Judaic Studies Program and its faculty is a testimony to the fecundity of the program in producing scholars, whose essays dominate the collection. Several essays come from other scholars whose home base is in the West and who have engaged in colloquia and common pursuits with the San Diego faculty. . . . "The goal of the collection is to present in curated form a selection of writings that highlight Fretheim's most significant and enduring insights. To this end, the 32 pieces included here are organized into thematic subsections that are meant to capture major themes in Fretheim's work. The volume begins with 2 essays situating Fretheim and his work--one by the editors and one by Fretheim himself (part 1). The essays in part 2, "God and the World," deal with Fretheim's understanding of God and God's relationship to the created order. Part 3, "God and Suffering," features pieces on the suffering of God and the world and includes an excerpt from Fretheim's groundbreaking book The Suffering of God. Part 4 is titled "God and Wrath." The essays gathered here deal with three overlapping themes: the wrath of God, divine violence, and God's frequent association with violence in the Old Testament. Part 5, "God and the Pentateuch," contains 6 essays that focus especially on Genesis 1-11, Exodus, and Deuteronomy. The essays in part 6 on "God and the Prophets" deal with various theological themes in the former, major, and minor prophets--all marked by Fretheim's unmistakable style and approach. The last part of the collection, part 7, "God and the Church's Book," address specific issues related to Christian theology, with an eye on denominational and congregational contexts. The volume concludes with a bibliography of Fretheim's works (1969-2013)"--

This is the eighth volume of Babel und Bibel, an annual of ancient Near Eastern, Old Testament, and Semitic studies. The principal goal of the annual is to reveal the inherent relationship between Assyriology, Semitics, and biblical studies—a relationship that our predecessors comprehended and fruitfully explored but that is often neglected today. The title Babel und Bibel is intended to point to the possibility of fruitful collaboration among the three disciplines, in an effort to explore the various civilizations of the ancient Near East.This volume is a festschrift for Joachim Krecher, Professor of Assyriology in the Westfälische Wilhelms-Universität Münster. Krecher is best known, perhaps, for his seminal Sumerische Kultlyrik, published already in 1966. This compendium includes 17 essays by friends and colleagues, all focusing on Sumerian language and literature.

A novel approach to Israelite kinship, arguing that maternal kinship bonds played key social, economic, and political roles for a son who aspired to inherit his father's household Upending traditional scholarship on patrilineal genealogy, Cynthia Chapman draws on twenty years of research to uncover an underappreciated yet socially significant kinship unit in the Bible: "the house of the mother." In households where a man had two or more wives, siblings born to the same mother worked to promote and protect one another's interests. Revealing the hierarchies of the maternal houses and political divisions within the national house of Israel, this book provides us with a nuanced understanding of domestic and political life in ancient Israel.
