Abstract

Beverly A. Teicher and a panel of leading experts comprehensively describe the state-of-the-art in animal tumor model research. This volume updates and extends the comprehensive presentations in the first edition. The wide array of models detailed form the basis for the selection of compounds and treatments that go into clinical testing of patients, and include syngeneic models, human tumor xenograft models, orthotopic models, metastatic models, and genetically engineered mouse models. Synthesizing many years experience with all the major in vivo models currently available for the study of malignant disease, Tumor Models in Cancer Research 2nd edition, provides preclinical and clinical cancer researchers alike with a comprehensive guide to the selection of these models, their effective use, and the optimal interpretation of their results.

Abstract

This volume constitutes a comprehensive review of the different aspects of tumor virology 100 years after the discovery of the Rous-sarcoma virus. Its aim is to bring a greater focus on the contributions of viral agents to the development of cancer, and to create an up to date compendium of the general molecular biology of these viruses,  their gene products, and targeted functions. The content of the book comprises general chapters which tie into the many aspects of cancer-related viruses and how they contribute to cell proliferation, the genes that are responsible for driving these cancers, and their mechanisms of transmission. The book also reviews the current knowledge on the molecular biology of large DNA viruses and describes the many different pathways through which they contribute to cell proliferation. Papilloma viruses and Adenoviruses, well known to be associated with invasive carcinomas, and hepatitis viruses, HTLV and retroviruses are also discussed. This volume is dedicated to  Baruch Blumberg, an outstanding scientist and recipient of the Nobel Prize for the discovery of the hepatitis B virus, who was also the author of one of the chapters.

Abstract

This volume aims to bring together efforts with a patient-oriented focus from physicians to diagnostics and clinical implications of the disease as mostly seen in the equatorial African setting. However, the chapters cover the breadth of studies on Burkitt’s lymphoma with some clues for the potential future of Burkitt’s lymphoma research that can have therapeutic benefits for patients.    This text explore a range of topics associated with Burkitt’s lymphoma, including molecular biology, diagnosis, its association with AIDS and Malaria, immune responses, therapeutic approaches and a unique view from the bedside. This volume is comprehensive and unique and represents the most up-to-date clinical and research activities on Burkitt’s lymphoma.

Abstract

The DNA tumor viruses are central to many branches of molecular and cellular biology. This very diverse group of viruses attack common cellular pathways, which makes them powerful tools for understanding how multiple complex pathways are integrated. Additionally, the unique mechanisms employed by each viral system to alter cellular functions serve as powerful molecular probes for the identification of new targets and pathways. The scientific impact of the DNA tumor viruses extends far beyond their etiologic role in human cancers, or their contributions to our basic understanding of the cellular pathways that drive tumorigenesis. Currently, research on these viruses lies at the interface of cancer and the innate and adaptive immune response, investigating how infectious agents influence, evade, and utilize systems that regulate these processes. Thus, DNA tumor viruses serve as models for the systems biology of host-pathogen interactions. "DNA Tumor Viruses," edited by Blossom Damania and James M. Pipas, summarizes recent advances in our understanding of this diverse and fascinating collection of viruses.

Abstract

'Tumor Biology' is the Official Journal of the International Society of Oncology and BioMarkers (ISOBM), an international journal publishing original research, mini-reviews and research commentaries on experimental and clinical cancer research. The Journal places special emphasis on articles covering all aspects of tumor markers and tumor targeting, but studies in other areas of clinical and translational cancer research are considered.
