Mountain forests provide important ecological services, and essential products. This book focuses on the importance of mountain forests in Cameroon for the local people who depend most directly on them, and have often developed a wealth of indigenous knowledge on plants and sophisticated institutions for managing limited plant and animal resources. Such knowledge and institutions have often been threatened, or even destroyed, by centralization and globalization; yet there is increasing recognition that community-based institutions are the best adapted to ensuring that mountain forests continue

This edited book provides comprehensive coverage of the recent advances in genetics and genomics of high-altitude crops (HACs). This book also assists in understanding the genomic adaptation to the environmental extremes at high altitude conditions. High-altitude crops are challenged by several high-altitude specific environmental stresses, i.e., extensive UV-B irradiation, extremely low temperature and intense hypoxia. These environmental constraints would be expected to cause genomic variations in HACs. Several studies have been conducted to dissect genetic and genomic regions in HACs to cope up with environmental stresses. However, these types of studies were not compiled or summarized anywhere. This book is of interest to teachers, researchers, climate change scientists, capacity builders and policymakers. Also, the book serves as a valuable resource for undergraduate and graduate students of agriculture, crop biotechnology, and environmental sciences. Scientists and policymakers who are working on high-altitude crops will also find this to be a useful read.

The mountain flora of Java constitutes a unique natural heritage of Indonesia and indeed of the whole world. The most informative and most beautifully illustrated book ever written on this rich resource is doubtlessly The Mountain Flora of Java written by the late renowned Dutch biologist C.G.G.J. van Steenis, with unsurpassed paint drawings of 456 flowering plant species by Amir Hamzah and Moehamad Toha. The first edition from 1972 was sold out fairly soon. Brill is therefore proud to publish this edition of this seminal work at this point in time. There are three very good reasons to reprint the Mountain Flora both in English and in the Indonesian language. • First of all there is the importance of this flora for biodiversity conservation and sustainable use of the vulnerable mountain ecosystems of Java. • Secondly, the unique style and quality of the 456 plant portraits by Amir Hamzah and Moehamad Toha. • Thirdly there is the science, explaining and interpreting the rich botanical diversity in the mountains of Java. Although written over 40 years ago Van Steenis' approach to the study of botany can still serve as an example and inspiration for young botanists, conservationists and policy makers.

This book brings together experts from different fields, who used a broad spectrum of methods to investigate the physiological and cellular adaptation of alpine plants from the tree line to the upper limits. Some articles link alpine plant physiology with physiological adaptations observed in polar plants. Tolerance against often high light intensities (including UV), cold or freezing temperatures, in addition to the need for fast tissue development, flowering, and propagation that is managed by alpine plants are to some extent underrepresented in recent research. This volume considers ice formation and winter conditions in alpine plants; the fate of cryophilic algae and microorganisms; cell structural adaptations; sexual reproduction in high altitudes; the physiology of photosynthesis, antioxidants, metabolites, carbon and nitrogen; and the influences of microclimate (temperatures at the plant level, heat tolerance), UV light, weather and ozone. Further information on life processes in alpine extreme environments may additionally yield new insights into the range of adaptation processes in lowland plants. .

Many recreational hikers have stopped along the trail to admire a wildflower only to wonder what, exactly, they are looking at. Wildflowers of the Mountain West is a useful field guide that makes flower identification easy for the general outdoor enthusiast. Many available plant guides are too technical or cumbersome for non-specialists to embrace. Covering New Mexico, Colorado, Wyoming, Idaho, Utah, Nevada and Oregon, this book is perfect for the enthusiasts who has little botanical knowledge but would like to know more about the wildflowers they are seeing.
