Abstract

The book prepared by students, working under tutorship of their teachers, from three Polish high schools, on the theme of Classical Antiquity and Nature, within the Our Mythical Childhood Project. Texts: Teachers and Students from the Schools involved in the Project: Janusz Ryba and the Students from Bartłomiej Nowodworski I High School in Kraków, Barbara Strycharczyk, Agata Płotczyk, Anna Łukomska, and the Students from "Strumienie" High School in Józefów, Anna Wojciechowska and the Students from Mikołaj Rej XI High School in Warsaw, and Katarzyna Marciniak, Faculty of "Artes Liberales", University of Warsaw. The publication appears in the series "OBTA Studies in Classical Reception" - as already the second volume in the educational cycle ("Educational Materials"), after "De viris mulieribusque illustribus", prepared in 2019 by the students participating in the Our Mythical History stage. Both volumes are in dialogue with each other by showing the interests of the young people and by pointing to the chances offered by an education in the spirit of artes liberales with the method of interdisciplinary team projects. This volume is in a dialogue also with other elements of the Our Mythical Childhood programme: the third edition of the video competition for elementary and high-school students "Antiquity-Camera-Action!", dedicated to the theme of ecology, and with the conference summing up the Nature stage. Katarzyna Marciniak, from "A Garden in the Library, or How the Classics Can Lead Us Back to Nature".

Abstract

Teachers and Students from the Schools involved in the Project: Barbara Bibik & the students from Nicolaus Copernicus University Academic Junior and Senior High School in Toruń, Janusz Ryba and the students from Bartłomiej Nowodworski I High School in Cracow, Barbara Strycharczyk and the students from "Strumienie" High School in Józefów, Anna Wojciechowska and the students from Mikołaj Rej XI High School in Warsaw, and Katarzyna Marciniak, Faculty of "Artes Liberales", University of Warsaw. Presented at the conference Our Mythical History: Children's and Young Adults' Culture in Response to the Heritage of Ancient Greece and Rome May 22-26, 2019. A close collaboration with schools has been a crucial element and a source of joy to all the people involved in our activities from the very beginning of the Our Mythical Childhood programme. [...] it was only natural to us to consolidate our efforts with support from the ERC Consolidator Grant. [...] All four schools ["Strumienie" High School in Józefów, Mikołaj Rej XI High School in Warsaw, Nicolaus Copernicus University Academic Junior and Senior High School in Toruń, and Bartłomiej Nowodworski I High School in Cracow] accepted the challenge of presenting four important figures from Polish history who were well versed in the classical tradition and whose lives may serve as biographies of, indeed, the illustres. [...] Besides the educational value of the texts gathered in the present book, there is something of a similar, if not major, importance - namely, the brightness and the light of optimism that this task brings to the worldwide discussions on the crisis in education. As long as such tasks and challenges are undertaken by the new generations, there is hope. From the introduction by Katarzyna Marciniak.

Abstract

Shifting our thinking to help break the cycle of bullying We all know bullying impacts the academic and emotional lives of our young people. We see it in our schools and hear about it in the news. If we know it's a problem, why is it still happening? Often it's because we fail to address the individuals at the heart of the problem, the kids who engage in the behavior. In Working With Kids Who Bully Walter Roberts challenges us to shift our thinking about these youth and offers innovative approaches to help kids pull back from and stop bullying. Readers will find Information on a range of topics impacting schools today, including cyberbullying, relational aggression, mediation, building empathy, and bibliomedia therapy Strategies and sample dialogue to use when intervening with kids who bully Diagrams and charts to clarify suggested approaches Written by one of the nation's foremost experts on bullying, this is a book designed to stimulate change and ultimately help create safer learning environments for all kids. Lots of times we focus on helping the victims, but Walter Roberts addresses how to help parents of children who are bullying, as they need tips rather than shaming. Brigitte Tennis, Headmistress & Eighth Grade Teacher Stella Schola Middle School The strengths of Working With Kids Who Bully are the vignettes posed, the reflection for analyzing the bullying situation, and the suggestions, almost specific guidance, for responding in a timely and empathetic manner. Dana Salles Trevethan, Interim Superintendent Turlock Unified School District.
