Entre la remise en question de l’intellectuel, qui n’aurait plus de rôle dans la société contemporaine, et de la négligence du texte malrucien, devenu supposément illisible parce qu’il soutient des thèses, S’engager : L’intellectuel dans l’œuvre d’André Malraux s’approprie et relaie un admirable modèle : celui du texte politique et de l’intellectuel engagé. Avec Malraux, ce livre veut penser les rapports entre action, réflexion et création. Par une analyse des romans L’Espoir (1937) et Les Noyers de l’Altenburg (1943), il s’agit d’abord de définir un intellectuel engagé dont l’implication se lie avec cohérence à la critique, d’insister sur la responsabilité réciproque de l’action et de l’écriture et de montrer leur simultanéité et leur continuité. Par une lecture attentive des deux tomes autobiographiques du Miroir des Limbes, Antimémoires (1967) et La Corde et les souris (1976), il s’agit ensuite de comprendre comment, par le refus de l’aveu, de l’intimité et du privé, par l’autofiction, l’autoplagiat, la métamorphose de la matière vécue et l’invention d’un héros à l’image d’une collectivité utopique, par la retranscription d’innombrables conversations avec de petits et grands personnages, André Malraux imagine ce que devrait être la littérature engagée : musée imaginaire, lieu de discussion, participation à l’histoire, projet de société.

The two principal axes of inquiry are Malraux's ongoing quest for a dimension of transcendence within human life and, at lest as compelling, his search for the most appropriate and effective means by which to express a changing awareness of just what that dimension might be. Not surprisingly, in a world apparently doomed to languish in the spectral shadow of Death, there are certain constants: a yearning for some fraternity to combat man's essential solitude, a refusal to sink without effort into the vortex of the Absurd, a conviciton that life is to be lived fully and intensely. The human condition is what it is. The ways in which Malraux's characters, and of course Malraux himself, cope with this condition reveal a clear evolution, especially from the 1933 novel La condition humaine onwards. The reader follows Malraux from playful adolescence through the dichotomy of anguish and glorification in his middle years, towards the primarily interrogative utterances of the mature man. The often frivolous, sometimes sardonic, humour of youth gives way first to a painful recognition of the abyss, then to the discovery of a very tentative equilibrium in the philosophy of metamorphosis espoused by an older Malraux. André Malraux: Towards the Expression of Transcendence reveals the principal steps by which Malraux achieved that equilibrium.

Andre Malraux was a major figure in French intellectual life in the twentieth century. A key component of his thought is his theory of art which presents a series of fundamental challenges to traditional explanations of the nature and purpose of art developed by post-Enlightenment aesthetics. For Malraux. art whether visual art. literature or music-is much more than a locus of beauty or a source of "aesthetic pleasure": it is one of the ways humanity defends itself against its fundamental sense of meaninglessness-one of the ways the "human adventure" is affirmed. Here for the first time is a comprehensive. step by step exposition. supported by illustrations. of Malraux's theory of art as presented in major works such as The Voices of Silence and The Metamorphosis of the Gods. Suitable for both newcomers to Malraux and more advanced students. the study also examines critical responses to these works by figures such as Maurice Merleau-Ponty. Maurice Blanchot. "Vietnam and the Colonial Condition of French Literature explores an aspect of modern French literature that has been consistently overlooked in literary histories: the relationship between the colonies--their cultures, languages, and people--and formal shifts in French literary production. Starting from the premise that neither cultural identity nor cultural production can be pure or homogenous, Leslie Barnes initiates a new discourse on the French literary canon by examining the work of three iconic French writers with personal connections to Vietnam: Andre Malraux, Marguerite Duras, and Linda Lê. In a thorough investigation of the authors' linguistic, metaphysical, and textual experiences of colonialism, Barnes articulates a new way of reading French literature: not as an inward-looking, homogenous, monolingual tradition, but rather as a tradition of intersecting and interdependent peoples, cultures, and experiences. One of the few books to focus on Vietnam's position within francophone literary scholarship, Barnes challenges traditional concepts of French cultural identity and offers a new perspective on canonicity and the division between "French" and "francophone" literature.
