Abstract

"Martin of Tours is one of the most popular saints of the Middle Ages and, accordingly, his hagiographical afterlife is tremendously rich. In the twelfth century, Martinian studies flourished again and Guibert of Gembloux (d. 1213) was an outstanding collector of ancient and modern material about his favourite patron, which he used as a basis for various works of his own. In the centre of this biographical and didactical project Guibert placed two rhythmical poems, which he dedicated to the life of Martin (Libellus panegericus) and an impressive series of his venerators (Libellus de specialibus piissimi patroni veneratoribus). In this book Peter Orth provides the first critical edition of both poems with about 12,000 rhythmical lines, together with an introduction, commentary and indices."--

Abstract

"This book shows how Heidegger and Levinas, in a novel and non-totalizing manner, attempt to re-think the history of philosophy in order to reveal a difference that has remained unthought, yet supposed by it. For Heidegger, this difference is the truth of Being, whereas for Levinas this difference is the other person. Uljée presents the relation between Levinas and Heidegger as a subtle, profound and complex rapport, which includes both their proximity and radical difference. This rapport is conceived not as a confrontation but rather as a transformation, as Levinas's notion of justice does not renounce Heidegger's account of truth and its deployment. Thinking Difference with Heidegger and Levinas shows how the ethical relation transforms the essence and task of philosophy in its entirety, since it shifts the orientation of philosophy and the task of thinking from its concern with truth as ground or foundation to a question of justice. As a consequence, philosophy is no longer riveted to Being and its truth, but answers to the call for justice. As such, philosophy must be conceived of as infinite commencement, where its impossibility to totalize meaning means that it can and remain open to the alterity of transcendence"--

Abstract

Martin Luther was one of the most influential and important figures of the second millennium. His break with Rome and the development of separate Evangelical churches affected not just the religious life of Europe but also social and political landscapes as well. More books have been written about Luther than nearly any other historical figure. Despite all these books, Luther remains an enigmatic figure. This book proposes to examine a number of key moments in Luther's life and fundamental theological positions that remain perplexing to most students. This book will also present an introductio

Abstract

Engaging the development of Heidegger's non-public writings on the event between 1936 and 1941, Daniela Vallega-Neu reveals what Heidegger's private writings kept hidden. Vallega-Neu takes readers on a journey through these volumes, which are not philosophical works in the traditional sense as they read more like fragments, collections of notes, reflections, and expositions. In them, Vallega-Neu sees Heidegger searching for a language that does not simply speak about being, but rather allows a sense of being to emerge in his thinking and saying. She focuses on striking shifts in the tone and movement of Heidegger's thinking during these important years. Skillfully navigating the unorthodox and intimate character of these writings, Vallega-Neu provides critical insights into questions of attunement, language, the body, and historicity in Heidegger's thinking.

Abstract

In 2017 the world celebrated the 500 years of the Reformation of the 16th century. Martin Luther was at the centre of this jubilee. He is the father of the Protestant Church. A large section of the Afrikaans-speaking community in southern Africa (and those scattered all over the world) belong to one of the Protestant churches. There is not a single academic introduction on Luther in Afrikaans. This publication will be the first in Afrikaans on Luther. The purpose is also to introduce the well-known and unknown writings of Luther to students and lecturers. Most readers will for the first time be able to read passages from his letters, sermons and commentaries. This book will hopefully be the beginning of a southern African Luther-reception. This will be a major contribution to the South African scholarship on church history. It will be the first publication that offers biographical information as well as information on and translations of his writings. Luther has until now, not spoke Afrikaans. The book is written from a southern African perspective. The author is looking for answers on African problems and challenges from Luther. Many of Luther's writings are relevant to our situation. He (as one example) urged the authorities and parents to ensure education for all children. In this country thousands of children are not in school, or do not complete their schooling education. Although we are centuries apart, we could still learn from Luther in this regard. Specialists in church history and systematic theology, as well as ministers and students. Hopefully this book will become prescribed literature at faculties of theology and seminars. The universal-accepted methodologies in the writing of church history are followed. One of the unique features of this book is the translations into Afrikaans of all quotations from Medieval German and Latin. This has never been done previously.
