La France et l'Angleterre, éternelles ennemies… Des guerres du Roi-Soleil au Blocus napoléonien, le stéréotype a la vie dure. L'antagonisme entre les deux pays semble renforcé par une barrière naturelle : la Manche. En mettant au cœur de la réflexion cette frontière maritime, qui n'est pas seulement donnée par la géographie mais bien construite par l'histoire, ce livre propose une autre interprétation des relations franco-anglaises sur la longue durée. Alternativement décrite comme un fossé ou une passerelle, la Manche est à la fois l'une et l'autre, selon les points de vue. Les théologiens voient dans son étroitesse le fruit de la providence divine, qui a ainsi rapproché les Gaulois et les Bretons. Ce qui n'empêche pas Louis XIV d'ordonner aux cartographes, aux ambassadeurs et aux amiraux de parler de la « Mer de France », refusant avec véhémence l'appellation d'« English Channel ». Du XVIIe siècle à la Révolution française, alors que grandit la rivalité économique et militaire entre les deux états, le Channel devient une frontière internationale. Des fortifications sont construites, des barrières douanières érigées, des passeports exigés des voyageurs. Mais cette frontière n'est jamais imperméable : en temps de paix comme en temps de guerre, des milliers d'individus, voyageurs, contrebandiers, marchands, pêcheurs, fraternisent ou commercent avec « l'ennemi » stigmatisé dans la propagande. Au-delà du discours traditionnel sur la haine francoanglaise, les pratiques quotidiennes des populations montrent l'ambivalence et la richesse des attitudes. Au fil d'une étude qui mêle histoire politique, économique et culturelle, c'est finalement la notion même d'identité nationale qui est ici remise en question.

Site naturel, patrimonial et archéologique, Tatihou, îlot du littoral oriental du Cotentin, a fait l’objet d’un ambitieux projet de mise en valeur conduit par le conseil régional de la Manche et concrétisé dès 1992 par l’ouverture d’un musée maritime, d’un centre de culture scientifique et d’une réserve d’oiseaux marins. C’est dans ce cadre qu’ont été réalisées, de 1996 à 1998, les fouilles préventives dont les résultats très novateurs constituent cette monographie. Tatihou est désormais considéré comme l’un des sites majeurs de référence pour l’âge du Bronze ancien et moyen de l’ouest de la France, notamment en matière de structuration du paysage agraire par un réseau de fossés orthogonal. Tatihou, an island of the east coast of the Cotentin, recognised as a major natural, heritage and archaeological site, is being upgraded by the Manche county council. Since 1992, a maritime museum, a research centre and a seabird reserve have been established. It is against this background that preventive archaeology was undertaken from 1996 until 1998, and the highly exciting results are contained within this volume. Tatihou is now considered to be one of the major reference sites for the early and middle Bronze Age in the west of France, particularly because of the field organisation underscored by a network of ditches which criss-cross at right-angles.

In Ports, Piracy, and Maritime War Thomas K. Heebøll-Holm presents a study of maritime predation in English and French waters around the year 1300. Following Cicero, pirates have traditionally been cast as especially depraved robbers and the enemy of all, but Heebøll-Holm shows that piracy was often part of private wars between English, French, and Gascon ports and mariners, occupying a liminal space between crime and warfare. Furthermore he shows how piracy was an integral part of maritime commerce and how the adjudication of piracy followed the legal procedure of the march. Heebøll-Holm convincingly demonstrates how piracy influenced the policies of the English and the French kings and he contributes to our understanding of Anglo-French relations on the eve of the Hundred Years’ War.

En ce temps-là, les évêques, couverts de leur cotte de mailles et armés d'une massue, n’hésitaient pas à participer aux batailles que se livraient les princes. Odon, évêque de Bayeux, et Geoffroi de Montbray évêque de Coutances, furent présents à Hastings et ne se contentèrent pas de combattre l'adversaire avec les seules armes de la prière. Souvent issus d’illustres familles aristocratiques, ils jouèrent un rôle capital dans la vie du duché de Normandie et dans le royaume anglo-normand. Mais ces évêques, bien installés dans la vie du siècle, ne délaissèrent nullement leurs responsabilités d’hommes d’Église : ils entreprirent de restaurer la vie religieuse, favorisèrent les fondations monastiques, se firent bâtisseurs de cathédrales et créèrent des centres de vie intellectuelle : certains furent même de remarquables savants, à l’exemple de Gilbert Maminot, évêque de Lisieux. De toutes ces personnalités étonnantes du xie siècle une s’impose avec plus de relief encore : Geoffroi de Montbray, évêque de Coutances pendant près de cinquante ans, de 1048 à 1093, qui fut un collaborateur efficace de Guillaume le Conquérant et qui édifia une magnifique cathédrale grâce notamment à l’argent offert par les aventuriers normands établis en Italie du Sud.

Rather than a natural frontier between natural enemies, this book approaches the English Channel as a shared space, which mediated the multiple relations between France and England in the long eighteenth century, in both a metaphorical and a material sense. Instead of arguing that Britain's insularity kept it spatially and intellectually segregated from the Continent, Renaud Morieux focuses on the Channel as a zone of contact. The 'narrow sea' was a shifting frontier between states and a space of exchange between populations. This richly textured history shows how the maritime border was imagined by cartographers and legal theorists, delimited by state administrators and transgressed by migrants. It approaches French and English fishermen, smugglers and merchants as transnational actors, whose everyday practices were entangled. The variation of scales of analysis enriches theoretical and empirical understandings of Anglo-French relations, and reassesses the question of Britain's deep historical connections with Europe.
