The workings of Western intelligence in our day - whether in politics or the arts, in the humanities or the church - are as troubling as they are mysterious, leading to the questions: where are we going? What in the world were we thinking? This text provides a broad framework for addressing these questions.

Luis de Molina (1535-1600) was the first scholastic doctor to legitimize the practice of money lending as a career. His De Iustitia et Iure offers a thorough description of trade practices of the vibrant economies of Portugal and Spain in the Sixteenth Century. This detailed analysis allows him to provide a moral assessment of these practices. His treatise is a capital example of how a deep commitment to received tradition and to contemporary economic issues can advance economic science and perfect moral theology through a better understanding of reality. This book shows how threads of field research, economic reflection, natural law tradition, casuistry and the quest for justice may weave together to form a major work of Catholic moral theology.

The Council of Trent (1545-1563), the Catholic Church's attempt to put its house in order in response to the Protestant Reformation, has long been praised and blamed for things it never did. Now, in this first full one-volume history in modern times, John W. O'Malley brings to life the volatile issues that pushed several Holy Roman emperors, kings and queens of France, and five popes-and all of Europe with them-repeatedly to the brink of disaster. During the council's eighteen years, war and threat of war among the key players, as well as the Ottoman Turks' onslaught against Christendom, turned the council into a perilous enterprise. Its leaders declined to make a pronouncement on war against infidels, but Trent's most glaring and ironic silence was on the authority of the papacy itself. The popes, who reigned as Italian monarchs while serving as pastors, did everything in their power to keep papal reform out of the council's hands-and their power was considerable. O'Malley shows how the council pursued its contentious parallel agenda of reforming the Church while simultaneously asserting Catholic doctrine. Like What Happened at Vatican II, O'Malley's Trent: What Happened at the Council strips mythology from historical truth while providing a clear, concise, and fascinating account of a pivotal episode in Church history. In celebration of the 450th anniversary of the council's closing, it sets the record straight about the much misunderstood failures and achievements of this critical moment in European history.

Since the middle of the nineteenth century, imperial reformers, early Republicans, Guomindang party cadres, and Chinese Communists have all prioritized science and technology. In this book, Elman gives a nuanced account of the ways in which native Chinese science evolved over four centuries, under the influence of both Jesuit and Protestant missionaries. In the end, he argues, the Chinese produced modern science on their own terms.

In Jesuit Survival and Restoration leading scholars from around the world discuss the most dramatic event in the Society of Jesus's history. The order was suppressed by papal command in 1773 and for the next forty-one years ex-Jesuits endeavoured to keep the Ignatian spirit alive and worked towards the order's restoration. When this goal was achieved in 1814 the Society entered one of its most dynamic but troubled eras. The contributions in the volume trace this story in a global perspective, looking at developments in Europe, Asia, Africa, and the Americas. Robert Aleksander Maryks, Ph.D. (2006) in History, Fordham University, is Associate Professor of History and director of the Institute of Jesuit Sources at Boston College. Jonathan Wright, D.Phil (Oxford, 1999), is Honorary Fellow in the Department of Theology and Religion at Durham University. Publisher's note.

How do sacraments differ from superstition? For Enlightenment philosophers such as Kant, both are merely natural actions claiming a supernatural effect, an accusation that has long been ignored in Catholic theology. In 'Maurice Blondel on the Supernatural in Human Action: Sacrament and Superstition', however, Cathal Doherty SJ reverses this accusation through a theological appropriation of Blondel's philosophy of action, arguing not only that sacraments have no truck with superstition but that the 'Enlightened' are themselves guilty of that which they most abhor, superstitious action. Doherty then uses Blondel's philosophical insights as a heuristic and corrective to putative sacramental theologies that would reduce the spiritual or supernatural efficacy of sacraments to the mere human effort of perception or symbolic interpretation.
