Examining hundreds of early printed books containing works by Chaucer, the 'father' of English poetry, and his much-maligned follower, John Lydgate. She demonstrates that the shift from manuscript to print was part of the controversial process by which Chaucer earned his exclusive place in English literary history.

Schrijver, drukker, uitgever en lezer in het verre en nabije verleden van de stad: Antwerp Book Capital 2004 biedt een unieke gelegenheid om een breed publiek te informeren over de rijke boekentraditie van de stad. (© Neder-L). Deze bundel bevat bijdragen over de geschiedenis van het boek in Antwerpen. Binnen- en buitenlandse specialisten op het terrein van de boekgeschiedenis selecteren uit elke eeuw een boek dat in Antwerpen werd gedrukt. Een vijftiende-eeuws 'Leven van Jezus', een zestiende-eeuws Nieuw Testament, ontspanningslectuur uit de zeventiende eeuw, de catalogus van een leeskabinet uit de achttiende eeuw, een prentenboek over 'De Leeuw van Vlaenderen' of Van Ostaijens 'Bezette Stad': aan de hand van dat ene boek schetsen de auteurs op een originele en aanschouwelijke manier een beeld van het Antwerpse boekbedrijf in de gekozen periode. Daarbij wordt niet alleen aandacht besteed aan technische productiekwesties, maar ook aan de distributie en de consumptie van het boek in ruimere kring. David McKitterick, een internationale autoriteit op het gebied van de boekgeschiedenis, plaatst bovendien het geheel in zijn context. En als toemaatje wordt een vroeg essay van Max Rooses over Plantin en Kiliaan herdrukt. (

Almost half a million books printed in the fifteenth century survive in collections worldwide. In Incunabula in Transit Lotte Hellinga explores how and where they were first disseminated. Propelled by the novel need to market hundreds of books, early printers formed networks with colleagues, engaged agents and traded Latin books over long distances. They adapted presentation to suit the taste of distinct readerships, local and remote. Publishing in vernacular languages required typographical innovations, as the chapter on William Caxton’s Flanders enterprise demonstrates. Eighteenth-century collectors dislodged books from institutions where they had rested since the sales drives of early printers. Erudite and entertaining, Hellinga’s evidence-based approach, linked to historical context, deepens understanding of the trade in early printed books.

Printing and Prophecy: Prognostication and Media Change 1450-1550 examines prognostic traditions and late medieval prophetic texts in the first century of printing and their effect on the new medium of print. The many prophetic and prognostic works that followed Europe's earliest known printed book---not the Gutenberg Bible, but the Sibyl's Prophecy, printed by Gutenberg two years earlier and known today only from a single page---over the next century were perennial best sellers for many printers, and they provide the modern observer with a unique way to study the history and inner workings of the print medium. The very popularity of these works, often published as affordable booklets, raised fears of social unrest. Printers therefore had to meet customer demand while at the same time channeling readers' reactions along approved paths.

This collection takes the Hebrew book as a focal point for exploring the production, circulation, transmission, and consumption of Hebrew texts in the cultural context of the late medieval western Mediterranean. The authors elaborate in particular on questions concerning private vs. public book production and collection; the religious and cultural components of manuscript patronage; collaboration between Christian and Jewish scribes, artists, and printers; and the impact of printing on Iberian Jewish communities. Unlike other approaches that take context into consideration merely to explain certain variations in the history of the Hebrew book from antiquity to the present, the premise of these essays is that context constitutes the basis for understanding practices and processes in late medieval Jewish book culture.
