Abstract

Learning spaces offer a rigorous mathematical foundation for various practical systems of knowledge assessment. An example is offered by the ALEKS system (Assessment and LEarning in Knowledge Spaces), a software for the assessment of mathematical knowledge. From a mathematical standpoint, learning spaces as well as knowledge spaces (which made the title of the first edition) generalize partially ordered sets. They are investigated both from a combinatorial and a stochastic viewpoint. The results are applied to real and simulated data. The book gives a systematic presentation of research and extends the results to new situations. It is of interest to mathematically oriented readers in education, computer science and combinatorics at research and graduate levels. The text contains numerous examples and exercises, and an extensive bibliography.

Abstract

This volume presents multidisciplinary perspectives from leading scholars in the science of teams and intelligent tutoring systems (ITSs) on research needed to advance the state of the art of team ITSs. Our esteemed authors provide lessons learned to guide future research that will produce the technical capabilities needed to support team skills development. The introduction by Drs. Robert Sottilare and Eduardo Salas, who are leaders in the field of ITSs and team science, discusses the challenges and approaches to building ITSs for teams. The volumes first section introduces concepts for understanding team training such as team task analysis, team macrocognition, measurement strategies for dynamic processes, and effective team training methods to provide insights into ITS design. Section two presents recent advances in team assessment and feedback through unobtrusive assessments, modeling dynamic team interactions, neurodynamic scaffolding, and collaborative tutoring strategies. In the Volumes third section authors discuss lessons learned from past research, provide a discourse on the five disciplinary perspectives of engineering, learning sciences, team research, data analysis, and human computer interaction to create a framework for guiding team ITS developers, and examine the team ITS requirements for long term space travel. The final chapter summarizes and integrates lessons learned and provides recommendations for future research and development.

Abstract

The idea for this book on Intelligent Tutoring Systems (ITS) was sparked by the success of the ITS’08 international conference. The number of presentations and their quality bore witness to the vitality and maturity of the field, and the enthusiasm of the participants held out a promise of sustainability and innovative research. Long life to ITS research! The book is divided into five parts. The introductory chapters to these parts, which summarize foundations, developments, strengths and weaknesses in each of the areas covered, are addressed to all readers. For those who want more in-depth knowledge, we give the floor to researchers who present their work, their results, and their view of what the future holds. It is our hope that all readers will find the book informative and thought-provoking.

Abstract

The Comprehensive Textbook of Healthcare Simulation is a cohesive, single-source reference on all aspects of simulation in medical education and evaluation.  It covers the use of simulation in training in each specialty and is aimed at healthcare educators and administrators who are developing their own simulation centers or programs and professional organizations looking to incorporate the technology into their credentialing process.  For those already involved in simulation, the book will serve as a state-of-the-art reference that helps them increase their knowledge base, expand their simulation program’s capabilities, and attract new, additional target learners. Features: •  Written and edited by pioneers and experts in healthcare simulation •  Personal memoirs from simulation pioneers •  Each medical specialty covered •  Guidance on teaching in the simulated environment •  Up-to-date information on current techniques and technologies •  Tips from “insiders” on funding, development, accreditation, and marketing of simulation centers •  Floor plans of simulation centers from across the United States •  Comprehensive glossary of terminology.

Abstract

Affective components are as important as cognitive components in tutoring assisted learning process. Feedback from tutors is essential in keeping students motivated. Affectivity and motivation are also significant in computer-based tutoring systems. However, several educational frameworks do not include this kind of interaction between students and tutoring systems. In those cases, the students learning interest and motivation to learn could be negatively affected, and student profits from the system could be impoverished. This is why tutoring systems need to provide direct and affective interaction with students; it can encourage them and increase the motivation to learn. This book introduces a broad range of topics in affective learning in computer-based systems. The text offers a deep conceptual background, covering relevant concepts of affectivity, feedback and motivational components in learning environments. It describes the design of a proposed model for providing affective feedback, the mathematical validation of the conceptual model and its implementation. Moreover, it presents an analysis of the impact of the affective feedback on student motivation to learn. Finally, the book offers research perspectives of the impact and applicability of the affective feedback in computer-based tutoring environments. Affective Feedback in Intelligent Tutoring Systems can be used by human tutors who want to include motivational and affective elements in the learning process, researchers in Human-Computer Interaction and Education and by software developers who want to develop learning systems using these elements.
