La Phénoménologie de l'esprit, parue en 1807, est un ouvrage singulier par son projet, sa forme, et la variété des sujets qu'il aborde. Il contient des développements célèbres concernant ce qu'on a appelé la « dialectique du maître et de l'esclave », la « conscience malheureuse » et la « belle âme », notamment. Bien que ces thèmes appartiennent à la culture commune et qu'ils se retrouvent aujourd'hui à tous les niveaux de l'enseignement philosophique, de la terminale à l'agrégation, aucun ouvrage collectif n'avait encore été publié en français qui se donne pour tâche de guider la lecture de ce chef-d'œuvre hégélien dans son intégralité. Rédigé par des spécialistes de Hegel, cet ouvrage suit pas à pas le cheminement de la Phénoménologie de l'esprit. Chaque contribution est consacrée à un chapitre ou une partie de chapitre dont elle propose un commentaire synthétique accessible. Par-delà l'objectif premier, aider à découvrir ou approfondir la Phénoménologie de l'esprit, il s'agit de restituer la diversité des appropriations philosophiques dont cette œuvre foisonnante a fait l'objet depuis sa parution et d'inviter les lecteurs et lectrices à en explorer la richesse inépuisable. Mit ihrer Studie liefert Maria Daskalaki eine systematische Rekonstruktion des Vernunftbegriffs in Hegels "Phänomenologie des Geistes", die der Absicht des Philosophen gerecht wird, den Gegensatz bzw. die Antinomie als die unüberschreitbare Grenze der Philosophie zu überwinden. Insofern widerspricht sie nachdrücklich weit verbreiteten Interpretationen der "Phänomenologie", in denen die Einheit und logische Argumentationsstruktur des Werkes in Frage gestellt wird. Die Autorin stellt sich die anspruchsvolle Aufgabe, die Übergänge zwischen den Gestalten des Bewusstseins ohne Anlehnung auf ein dogmatisch angenommenes philosophisches Prinzip nachzuvollziehen. Deswegen setzt sie bei den "natürlichen Bestimmungen" des Bewusstseins an, wie sie Hegel selbst in der Einleitung festlegt. In ihrer Studie verfolgt sie detailliert die Gestalten des Bewusstseins bis zum Vernunftkapitel und führt die These einer Bewegung von der Substanz zum Subjekt und umgekehrt ein, die alle Gestalten des Bewusstseins durchdringt. Anhand dieser These wird der Versuch Hegels - im Unterschied zu Kant und Fichte - beleuchtet, den Dualismus zu überwinden und die tiefere Einheit zwischen Denken und Sein zu begründen, ohne auf irrationale Mittel zurückzugreifen. Durch ihren innovativen Interpretationsvorschlag zeigt die Autorin überzeugend die Einheit und logische Stringenz der Hegelschen Vernunftbegründung in der "Phänomenologie" auf.
