Dit boek biedt een systematisch overzicht van de basisbegrippen fonetiek en fonologie die de taalkunde hanteert om het domein van de klankstructuur wetenschappelijk te beschrijven. Het behandelt de twee niveaus waarop we het spraakgeluid in mondelinge communicatie kunnen bestuderen: enerzijds het concrete niveau van de fonetiek, waarbij de taalonafhankelijke analyse van de materiële vorm op zich centraal staat, en anderzijds het abstracte niveau van de fonologie, waar we de bijdrage bestuderen van die klankmatige vorm tot de betekeniscode van een specifieke taal.In het eerste deel komen de drie perspectieven op het concrete spraakgeluid aan bod, met name de productie (in de articulatorische fonetiek), de transmissie (in de akoestische fonetiek) en de perceptie (in de auditorische fonetiek), en dat zowel van de vocalen (klinkers) als van de consonanten (medeklinkers). In het tweede deel bespreken de auteurs binnen de segmentale fonologie de verschillende fonologische regels en het fenomeen van Connected Speech, en binnen de suprasegmentale fonologie de fonotaxis, syllabestructuur en prosodie.Het boek veronderstelt geen taalkundige voorkennis en is bedoeld voor al wie grondig kennis wil maken met de verschillende aspecten van het gesproken Nederlands. Voor studenten Taalkunde of Logopedische en Audiologische Wetenschappen kan het fungeren als studie-materiaal bij een inleidende module Fonetiek en Fonologie.
