Abstract

In the last years, the switched reluctance machines (SRMs) have been the subject of significant developments. SRMs are gaining much interest because of their simplicity in structures, high-output power, high starting torque, wide speed range, rugged and robust construction, reliability, and low manufacturing costs, which make these machines viable for many applications. SRMs include machines of different structures whose common property is the significant variation in the shape of the air gap during rotation. The use of advanced control technologies makes possible the integration of the mechanical and electrical conversion systems in their optimal mode of operation. Different strategies of control can be applied to SRMs, depending on their mode of functioning and the purpose of their applications. The goal of this book is to present recent works on concept, control, and applications in switched reluctance machines.

Abstract

Industrial use of the brushless servomotor, for instance in robotics, is increasing rapidly, because of their low maintenance needs and capabilities at high transient speeds. They offer flexibility and high performance, and advances in power electronics and microelectronics means they are now more affordable. This handbook gives the user of brushless servomotors a comprehensive guide to their use, including a description of all main features of the brushless motor drive system. Throughout mathematics is kept to a minimum and practical guidance is given based on real-life experience.

Abstract

Switched reluctance motors have steadily increased in commercial importance since their introduction in the early 1980's, while their technology - especially of their electronic control - has made great progress. Their unique characteristics introduce a delicate balance, in which the copper and iron are diminished in quantity, complexity and cost, in favour of a greater reliance on sophistication in the controller. Thus mastery of the control is the key challenge in the application of these machines. This book is intended for engineer's in industry and in the large research community in

Abstract

This book offers a general approach to pulse width modulation techniques and multilevel inverter topologies. The multilevel inverters can be approximately compared to a sinusoidal waveform because of their increased number of direct current voltage levels, which provides an opportunity to eliminate harmonic contents and therefore allows the utilization of smaller and more reliable components. On the other side, multilevel inverters require more components than traditional inverters and that increases the overall cost of the system. The various algorithms for multilevel neutral point clamped inverter fed induction motor are proposed and implemented, and the results are analyzed. The performance of these algorithms is evaluated in terms of inverter output voltage, current waveforms and total harmonic distortion. Various basic pulse width modulation techniques, features and implementation of space vector pulse width modulation for a two-level inverter, and various multilevel inverter topologies are discussed in detail. This book is extremely useful for undergraduate students, postgraduate students, industry people, scientists of research laboratories and especially for the research scholars who are working in the area of multilevel inverters. Dr. Satish Kumar Peddapelli is Assistant Professor at the Osmania University in Hyderabad, India. His areas of interest are Power Electronics, Drives, Power Converters, Multi Level Inverters and Special Machines.

Abstract

Axial Flux Permanent Magnet (AFPM) brushless machines are modern electrical machines with a lot of advantages over their conventional counterparts. They are being increasingly used in consumer electronics, public life, instrumentation and automation system, clinical engineering, industrial electromechanical drives, automobile manufacturing industry, electric and hybrid electric vehicles, marine vessels and toys. They are also used in more electric aircrafts and many other applications on larger scale. New applications have also emerged in distributed generation systems (wind turbine generators, high-speed micro turbine generators), miniature power supplies, flywheel energy storages, aircraft and rotorcraft actuators, missile fin actuators, naval integrated motor-propellers (rim driven thrusters). The role of axial flux PM brushless machines is increasing especially in applications where integration of motors with other mechanical parts is imperative. This book deals with the analysis, construction, design, control and applications of AFPM machines. The authors present their own research results, as well as significant research contributions made by others. Growing interest in new topologies of permanent magnet (PM) brushless machines has prompted the authors to update the first edition of Axial Flux Permanent Magnet Brushless Machines. In this second edition new sections (non-overlap concentrated coil windings, rotor dynamics, miniature axial flux PM motors, in-wheel motors), new examples of applications and more numerical examples have been added. This monograph will be of interest to electrical engineers and other engineers involved in the design and application of AFPM brushless machine drives. It will be an important resource for researchers and graduate students in the field of electrical machine and drives.

Abstract

Nonlinear and Adaptive Control Design for Induction Motors is a unified exposition of the most important steps and concerns in the design of estimation and control algorithms for induction motors. A single notation and modern nonlinear control terminology is used to make the book accessible to readers who are not experts in electric motors at the same time as giving a more theoretical control viewpoint to those who are. In order to increase readability, the book concentrates on the induction motor, eschewing the much more complex and less-well-understood control of asynchronous motors. The concepts of stability and nonlinear control theory are presented in appendices. Important features of the book include: • thorough coverage of speed sensorless control, important for applications; • a wide-ranging discussion of nonlinear adaptive controls containing parameter estimation algorithms; • coverage of the design of adaptive observers and parameter estimators which can complement state feedback design techniques; • comparative simulations of different control algorithms on the same motor to clarify the advantages and drawbacks of each. The content is organized in a pedagogical, progressive exposition starting from basic assumptions, structural properties, modelling, state feedback control and estimation algorithms, and moving on to more complex output feedback control algorithms and modelling for speed sensorless control. Adaptive output feedback controls are based on stator current measurements, both alone and in connection with rotor speed. The induction motor exhibits many typical and unavoidable nonlinear features and so the material presented in this volume will be of value to engineers engaged in the control of electric motors and to a broader audience interested in nonlinear control design.
