Ce fut bien une grande affaire que la réception de la bulle Unigenitus, et s’attacher aux positions et réactions des évêques français en ces circonstances constitue un point de vue original qui s’intéresse à des personnalités maltraitées par l’historiographie traditionnelle. Ces prélats sont incontestablement de bons administrateurs en ce temps de troubles. Ils sont essentiellement rigoristes, gallicans et prudents pour la plupart, même si les Nouvelles ecclésiastiques viennent donner un relief particulier aux idées extrêmes de quelques-uns. Le jansénisme et la Bulle ne sont plus qu’un prétexte à une réflexion sur les rapports entre l’Église et l’État. Faut-il accepter la Constitution parce que le roi le veut ou la refuser pour protéger les libertés gallicanes mises en cause par Rome ? C’est tout le paradoxe d’un épisode riche d’ambiguïtés et de contradictions, aux enjeux théologico-politiques d’une terrible complexité. Ces pages invitent à une relecture de la grande querelle qui a bouleversé l’Église de France dans la première moitié du xviiie siècle. Elles se proposent de guider le lecteur dans les inextricables débats qui ont agité le clergé et la monarchie lors de la réception de la constitution de Clément XI ; puis d’aborder les conséquences pastorales de l’Unigenitus dans les diocèses et dans les ouvrages forgés par les curies épiscopales, des bréviaires aux missels en passant par les catéchismes.

"In 1790, the French revolutionary government reformed the Catholic Church and demanded that clerics swear an oath of allegiance to the nation and its vision for French Catholicism. Although half of France’s parish clergy refused to accept the state-sponsored reforms, others became embroiled in this decade long ecclesiastical experiment. This included Jean-Baptiste Volfius, a patriot, priest, and professor who embraced the changes in France and believed in the revolution’s potential to create a purer church. Patriot and Priest presents a social and intellectual history of the French constitutional church in the Côte‐d’Or and the career of Volfius, who became its bishop in 1791, as he struggled to create and run the church. Annette Chapman-Adisho addresses the daily experience of the constitutional clergy over the course of ten years, exploring the interactions between priests and local and national authorities, the response of the laity to the divisions in the French Catholic Church, the evolution of these issues over time, and the eventual reconciliation of the clergy following the Napoleonic Concordat with Pope Pius VII in 1801. Using a rich collection of archival sources, this book demonstrates that although the constitutional church was ultimately a failed project, its legacy endured long after it ended. Tracing the social, political, and theological history of this reform effort, Patriot and Priest offers new insights into the French Revolution and its impact on French Catholicism."--

La Bibliothèque nationale de France conserve plusieurs centaines de partitions vénitiennes, imprimées ou manuscrites, d’une très grande valeur musicale et culturelle, dont la simple présence dans notre pays constitue une énigme. Comment ces œuvres sont-elles arrivées en France, alors que depuis 1672 - date à laquelle Jean-Baptiste Lully prend la tête de l’Académie royale de musique - et jusqu’à la fin de l’Ancien Régime, aucun opera seria ultra montain n’est créé sur une scène française ? C’est grâce à son excellente connaissance des rouages de la vie théâtra le et religieuse de Venise que Sylvie Mamy répond à cette question. Sa plume alerte suit à la trace le voyageur français qui, au xviiie siècle, frappe à la porte des copistes de musique de la Cité des doges avec l’ardent espoir de rapporter dans sa malle une aria chantée au théâtre par Farinelli ou par Faustina, fragile évocation de l’émotion d’un instant, qu’au retour on rangera secrètement sur les rayons de sa bibliothèque. Laissant la partition raconter son histoire, l’auteur jette un éclairage tout à fait inattendu sur la diffusion et la réception de l’opéra italien en France et sur les relations entre Paris et Venise au siècle des Lumières, tout en enrichissant un pan entier de l’histoire musicale européenne.
