The story of Susanna and the Elders is one of the most interpreted and reproduced tales from the Apocrypha, and for good reason. In its compact narrative, it touches on attempted rape, female sexuality, abuse of power, punishment for the wicked, and voyeurism. The Good, the Bold, the Beautiful argues that the story of Susanna was written in the first century BCE, and Clanton provides a brief description of that century. In Nederland worden cliënten en patiënten in de gesloten psychiatrische zorg en TBS, die vaak een bedreiging voor zichzelf en anderen vormen, of ernstige delicten hebben gepleegd, behandeld op leefgroepen, begeleid door Hbo-opgeleide sociotherapeuten (groepswerkers). Zij hebben de moeilijke taak om dagelijks een balans te vinden tussen flexibiliteit in therapeutisch handelen, nodig voor herstel en controle, nodig om chaos en agressie op de groep te voorkomen. Met hun vakkennis en ervaring zijn ze in staat ernstig ontregelde mensen weer te stabiliseren en contact te leggen. Medewerkers en cliënten/patiënten vormen samen een sociaal-pedagogisch leefklimaat op de groep, een belangrijke voorwaarde voor herstel. Voor afkortingen oftewel abbreviations, Abkürzungen, abréviations, abreviaturas en abbreviazioni gelden in deze talen afwijkende regels. Wie die in het zakenleven regelmatig onder ogen krijgt, kan in dit boekje snel opzoeken wat ook al weer de betekenis is. De uitgave kan ook nuttig zijn voor wie de cryptische afkortingen in voetnoten van bijvoorbeeld wetenschappelijke artikelen helemaal wil doorgronden. Volgens de makers van dit overzicht zijn deze afko's niet allemaal in gewone woordenboeken terug te vinden. Voor een groot aantal geldt dat echter wél. Dit onderdeel van de serie 'TaalAnker', een cahierreeks voor taalgebruikers, zal dan ook waarschijnlijk niet het meest gebruikte worden.

This volume offers detailed studies into the Physiologus, a Greek manuscript probably written in Egypt in the 2nd century CE. The Physiologus was the first Christian text to sum up a general understanding of nature using biblical and pagan sources and it has an extensive reception history throughout the medieval period. Its symbolic use of animals and plants, etc., has deeply influenced visual arts, literature, and heraldry, but this visual language often remains enigmatic. This book, going back to a project of the Swiss National Foundation (Das ‹Evangelium der Natur›. Der griechische Physiologus und die Wurzeln der frühchristlichen Naturdeutung) offers new insights into the origins and the interpretation of this symbolic language. Was hat der Pelikan mit Christus zu tun oder das Einhorn mit der Jungfrau Maria? Der Physiologus, eine ursprünglich in griechischer Sprache in Ägypten abgefasste frühchristliche Schrift, bietet unter Aufnahme biblischer wie paganer Motivik und Naturlehre eine christliche Gesamtdeutung der Natur. Über mittelalterliche Bestiarien findet die Symbolik des Physiologus Eingang in Kunst, Literatur und Heraldik. Die Bedeutung einer solchen christologisch grundgelegten Bildsprache bleibt indes heutzutage vielfach rätselhaft. Im vorliegenden Band wird die Schrift mit ihren Quellen, ihren onto-theologischen Grundlagen und ihren Deutungsmethoden sowie ihrer Rezeption breit interdisziplinär ausgeleuchtet (antike Naturkunde, altorientalische und biblische Bildwelt, Septuaginta, Kirchenväterliteratur, Rezeption in Kunst und Musik, Handschriftenkunde), um so zu einem historischen Verständnis christlicher Tiersymbolik beizutragen. Ein besonderes Augenmerk liegt auf der berühmten illuminierten Berner Physiologus-Handschrift, die vollständig abgedruckt wird.
