Grattan begins his history of the Netherlands in 50BC, describing the harsh landscape and the industrious people who lived on it. He takes the reader on a journey through time, from the invasion of the French and Spanish through the formation of Holland and the establishment of the Dutch monarchy. The history continues in detail through the many wars fought by the Dutch, ending in the joining of Holland and Belgium into a single country. History buffs will enjoy this detailed retelling of the making of a nation. Irish writer THOMAS COLLEY GRATTAN (1792-1864) was born in Dublin, where he eventually studied law. He is best known for his book Highways and Byways, a memoir detailing his trips across continental Europe. He also wrote history books, including one on the United States.

As early as the 19th century discoveries of groups of large axes puzzled those confronted with them. The fact that most were found in waterlogged places increased the speculation as to the nature of the deposits. This thesis is concerned with the character and significance of TRB flint axe depositions. The first part is mainly concerned with the question of selective deposition and how it was structured. By means of metrical, spatial and functional analysis, patterns are explored that can shed light on the actions performed by people in the past.

In 1856 L.J.F. Janssen, curator of the Dutch Museum of Antiquities, published his book Hilversumsche Oudheden. Eene bijdrage tot de ontwikkelingsgeschiedenis der vroegste Europesche volken (Translation: Antiquities from Hilversum. A contribution to the history of development of the earliest European peoples ). It will not be surprising that the book is scientifically not completely up to date. However the book is still of interest when considering its historical context. Archaeology, as we know it today, is for an important part based on ideas that were developed in the middle of the 19th cent
