Illuminated documents have long been treated as research stepchildren. Not least because of the use of digital aids, they have increasingly come into the public eye in the past decade. The newly awakened research interest focuses on the changed performativity of certificates through the addition of decorative elements. The richly illustrated volume presents essays by researchers from eleven countries who examine illuminated certificates from different perspectives of their disciplines.

Legal formularies are books of model legal documents compiled by early medieval scribes for their own use and that of their pupils. A major source for the history of early medieval Europe, they document social relations beyond the narrow world of the political elite. Formularies offer much information regarding the lives of ordinary people: sales and gifts of land, divorces, adoptions, and disputes over labour as well as theft, rape or murder. Until now, the use of formularies as a historical source has been hampered by severe methodological problems, in particular through the difficulty of establishing a precise chronological or geographical context for them. By examining Frankish legal formularies from the Merovingian and Carolingian periods, this book provides an invaluable, detailed analysis of the problems and possibilities associated with formularies, and will be required reading for scholars of early medieval history.

Twelfth-century individuals negotiated personal relationships along a continuum connecting rather than polarizing immediacy and mediated representation. Their markers of individuation, signs of identity and media of communication thus evidence practical engagement with contemporary medieval sign theory and perceptions of reality. In this study, the relevance of modern theory for the interpretation of medieval artifacts is shown to depend upon the parallel existence of theoretical activity by the producers and users of such artifacts. In the cultural landscape of the central Middle Ages, the axes of iconicity, semantics and materiality traced by charters, seals, and by both concrete and metaphorical images of the imprint, dynamically shaped the boundaries within which a sense of self was formulated, modulated, experienced, and enacted.

In "A monument to the country. Official statistics in Belgium, 1795-1870" Nele Bracke unravels why and how the Belgian state and its predecessors organized and developed an official statistical apparatus in order to collect numerical information. The study captures the underlying objectives and structures, as well as the methods to compile statistics. Nele Bracke investigates the meaning and significance of government statistics in the 19th-century State and society. In Belgium, early social scientists established an internationally renowned "statistical system" designed to collect information about the country, the people and the society. This "statistical system" was built around the "Commission centrale de Statistique" (statistical committee) and the production of demographic, economic and agricultural censuses. In the first part of the book, the author analyzes the institutional history of the "Commission centrale de Statistique" and its predecessors. In the second part of the book, she studies the censuses. In "Een monument voor het land. Overheidsstatistiek in België, 1795-1870" ontrafelt Nele Bracke (Universiteit Gent) hoe de Belgische overheid geïnspireerd door de overheidsstatistiek van vóór 1830 een eigen systeem uitbouwde om informatie over het land en de bevolking bijeen te brengen. Ze combineert een instellingengeschiedenis van de Commission centrale de Statistique met een analyse van de tienjaarlijkse volks-, landbouw- en industrietellingen die vanaf 1846 werden georganiseerd. Het onderzoek legt zowel de onderliggende structuren en doelstellingen van de overheidsstatistiek als de praktische werkwijze om de statistieken samen te stellen bloot. Nele Bracke dringt door tot de betekenis van de overheidsstatistiek in de 19de-eeuwse staat en samenleving. De officiële statistieken voorzagen het landsbestuur niet alleen van informatie over het land. Ze bepaalden ook op welke manier België werd waargenomen door binnen- en buitenlandse observatoren. Zo ondersteunden de overheidsstatistieken de 19de-eeuwse wordingsgeschiedenis van België.
