The Collaborative Research Center SFB 401: Flow Modulation and Fluid-Structure Interaction at Airplane Wings investigates numerically and experimentally fundamental problems of very high capacity aircraft having large elastic wings. This issue summarizes the findings of the 12-year research program at RWTH Aachen University which was funded by the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) from 1997 through 2008. The research program covered the following three main topics of large transport aircraft: (i) Model flow, wakes, and vortices of airplanes in high-lift-configuration, (ii) Numerical tools for large scale adaptive flow simulation based on multiscale analysis and a parametric mapping concept for grid generation, and (iii) Validated computational design tools based on direct aeroelastic simulation with reduced structural models.

The book reports on the results of the BrenaRo Winterschool 2011, held on November 21-22 in Aachen, Germany. The different chapters cover a number of aspects of the topic of energy generation, with a particular focus on energy generation from biomass. They presents new findings concerning engine development, process engineering, and biological and chemical conversion of biomass to fuels, and highlight the importance of an interdisciplinary approach, combining chemistry, biology and engineering research, to the use of renewable energy sources. All in all, this book provides readers with a snapshot of the state-of-the-art in renewable energy conversion, and gives an overview of the ongoing work in this field in Germany.

This volume contains a collection of papers from the research program “Protective Artificial Respiration (PAR)”. In 2005 the German Research Association DFG launched the research program PAR which is a joint initiative of medicine and fluid mechanics. The main long-term objective of this program is the development of a more protective artificial respiratory system to reduce the physical stress of patients undergoing artificial respiration. To satisfy this goal 11 projects have been defined. In each of these projects scientists from medicine and fluid mechanics do collaborate in several experimental and numerical investigations to improve the fundamental knowledge on respiration and to develop a more individual artificial breathing concept.

This open access book presents the findings of Collaborative Research Center Transregio 40 (TRR40), initiated in July 2008 and funded by the German Research Foundation (DFG). Gathering innovative design concepts for thrust chambers and nozzles, as well as cutting-edge methods of aft-body flow control and propulsion-component cooling, it brings together fundamental research undertaken at universities, testing carried out at the German Aerospace Center (DLR) and industrial developments from the ArianeGroup. With a particular focus on heat transfer analyses and novel cooling concepts for thermally highly loaded structures, the book highlights the aft-body flow of the space transportation system and its interaction with the nozzle flow, which are especially critical during the early phase of atmospheric ascent. Moreover, it describes virtual demonstrators for combustion chambers and nozzles, and discusses their industrial applicability. As such, it is a timely resource for researchers, graduate students and practitioners. .
