Abstract

Non potendo conseguire l’immortalità, gli umani cercano ostinatamente di prolungare la vita e di potenziare le proprie capacità fisiche e mentali, ricorrendo sempre più alla scienza e alla tecnologia. Il libro illustra questi tentativi, che preludono all’avvento di un nuovo stadio dell’umanità, di un “post-umano” che, grazie alle pratiche della bioingegneria e alle tecnologie della mente, potrebbe presentarsi in forme inedite: individui migliorati nell’aspetto fisico, nella salute e nella longevità, oppure simbionti di uomo e di macchina, robot e cyborg, oppure componenti di una smisurata “creatura planetaria” dotata di capacità mentali senza precedenti, sede di una vasta intelligenza connettiva e deposito sterminato di conoscenze. Si tratta di un potente atto di delega tecnologica dalle conseguenze non tutte positive e in parte imprevedibili. I possibili scenari del post-umano sono analizzati sotto il profilo teorico, sociale ed etico, e se ne mettono in luce i possibili rischi. I cinque capitoli del libro sono corredati da alcuni racconti, da frequenti citazioni di autori classici e contemporanei e da illustrazioni di opere originali di Luigi Battisti e Fabrizio Bosco.
