Einstein's Space-Time: An Introduction to Special and General Relativity is a textbook addressed to students in physics and other people interested in Relativity and a history of physics. The book contains a complete account of Special Relativity that begins with the historical analysis of the reasons that led to a change in our manner of regarding the space and time. The first chapters are aimed to afford a deep understanding of the relativistic spacetime and its consequences for Dynamics. The chapter about covariant formulation includes among its topics the concepts of volume and hypersurfaces in manifolds, energy-momentum tensor of a fluid, and prepares the language for General Relativity. The last two chapters are devoted to an introduction of General Relativity and Cosmology in a modern approach connected with the latest discoveries in these areas.

Since their very inception, both fuzzy and rough set theories have earned a sound, well-deserved reputation owing to their intrinsic capabilities to model uncertainty coming from the real world. The increasing amount of investigations on both subjects reported every year in the literature vouches for the dynamics of the area and its rapid advancements. In the last few years the widespread utilization of fuzzy and rough sets as granulation sources has contributed to lay both methodologies in a privileged position within Granular Computing, thus giving rise to a sort a modeling which is far closer to the way human beings perceive their environment – via granulated knowledge. This volume is a compilation of the best papers presented at the First International Symposium on Fuzzy and Rough Sets (ISFUROS 2006) held in Santa Clara, Cuba. You will therefore find valuable contributions both in the theoretical field as in several application domains such as intelligent control, data analysis, decision making and machine learning, just to name a few. Together, they will catch you up with the huge potential of the aforementioned methodologies.

The study of surfaces with constant mean curvature (CMC) is one of the main topics in classical differential geometry. Moreover, CMC surfaces are important mathematical models for the physics of interfaces in the absence of gravity, where they separate two different media, or for capillary phenomena. Further, as most techniques used in the theory of CMC surfaces not only involve geometric methods but also PDE and complex analysis, the theory is also of great interest for many other mathematical fields. While minimal surfaces and CMC surfaces in general have already been treated in the literature, the present work is the first to present a comprehensive study of “compact surfaces with boundaries,” narrowing its focus to a geometric view. Basic issues include the discussion whether the symmetries of the curve inherit to the surface; the possible values of the mean curvature, area and volume; stability; the circular boundary case; and the existence of the Plateau problem in the non-parametric case. The exposition provides an outlook on recent research but also a set of techniques that allows the results to be expanded to other ambient spaces. Throughout the text, numerous illustrations clarify the results and their proofs. The book is intended for graduate students and researchers in the field of differential geometry and especially theory of surfaces, including geometric analysis and geometric PDEs. It guides readers up to the state-of-the-art of the theory and introduces them to interesting open problems.

Until recently, many neuroscientists were skeptical of the idea that classical neurotransmitters could be co-released from neurons. It is now common knowledge, though, that the "one neuron, one neurotransmitter" postulate is the exception rather than the rule. Co-Existence and Co-Release of Classical Neurotransmitters provides readers with a comprehensive overview of research from the world’s leading neuroscience authors, all of whom have discovered and studied the co-existence or co-release of several pairs of neurotransmitters in neural networks. Their reviews include novel aspects of transmitter combinations, such as NA-ACh, monoamines-glutamate, ACh-glutamate, cross-talk between monoamines, GABA and ATP, and various combinations of aminoacid transmitters. Co-Existence and Co-Release of Classical Neurotransmitters will be particularly useful to neuroscience graduate students, academics, and researchers in synaptic physiology and synaptic plasticity. This book is the first of its kind to center on the timely issue of co-release of neurotransmitters, and serves as an important contribution to the re-consideration of this idea in other brain regions. About the Editor: Dr. Rafael Gutiérrez was among the first to study the physiological impact of the co-existence of glutamate and GABA in the hippocampus, particularly the developmental and activity-dependent expression of GABAergic markers in granule cells. Since 1997, Dr. Gutiérrez has been a professor of neurosciences at the Center for Research and Advanced Studies (CINVESTAV) in Mexico City. He received his PhD in Neurosciences from the National University of Mexico in 1993 and, under the prestigious Alexander von Humboldt Research Scholarship, worked for three years with pathophysiology expert Uwe Heinemann in Germany.

This book provides a persuasive account of how identity and difference factor in the debate on the ‘self’ in the humanities. It explores this topic by applying the question to fields such as philosophy, cultural studies, politics and race studies. Key themes discussed in this collection include: authenticity in Michel de Montaigne’s essays, the limits of the narrative constitution of the self, the use and abuse of the notion of human nature in political theory and in the current political context of multiculturalism, and the feminist notion of the erotic and of sexual violence. This book will appeal to readers with an interest in new perspectives on the self within the humanities.

An Introduction to Bibliometrics: New Development and Trends provides a comprehensible, readable and easy to read introduction to bibliometrics. Importantly, the book surveys the latest developments of bibliometrics (such as altmetrics, etc.) and how the field is likely to change over the next decade. In the literature, bibliometrics is generally discussed from one of two perspectives: (1) Purely mathematical/statistical or (2) Its sociological implications. Both approaches are very far from how most users want to apply bibliometrics. This book fills that need by providing tactics on how bibliometrics can be applied to their sphere of scientific activity.

The quantification of knowledge to evaluate the performance of scholars or rank entire institutions, research locations, or nations is an increasingly common phenomenon. This volume introduces the subject of bibliometrics in concise form, describes the most important measurement techniques in a clearly understandable way, and explains how to independently create, assess, and interpret bibliometric analyses. The work is thus an easily readable and practical aid to decision-makers, science managers, academics, as well as librarians and information professionals.
