Abstract

Petri Nets are graphical and mathematical tool used in many different science domains. Their characteristic features are the intuitive graphical modeling language and advanced formal analysis method. The concurrence of performed actions is the natural phenomenon due to which Petri Nets are perceived as mathematical tool for modeling concurrent systems. The nets whose model was extended with the time model can be applied in modeling real-time systems. Petri Nets were introduced in the doctoral dissertation by K.A. Petri, titled “„Kommunikation mit Automaten” and published in 1962 by University of Bonn. During more than 40 years of development of this theory, many different classes were formed and the scope of applications was extended. Depending on particular needs, the net definition was changed and adjusted to the considered problem. The unusual “flexibility” of this theory makes it possible to introduce all these modifications. Owing to varied currently known net classes, it is relatively easy to find a proper class for the specific application. The present monograph shows the whole spectrum of Petri Nets applications, from classic applications (to which the theory is specially dedicated) like computer science and control systems, through fault diagnosis, manufacturing, power systems, traffic systems, transport and down to Web applications. At the same time, the publication describes the diversity of investigations performed with use of Petri Nets in science centers all over the world.

Abstract

Petri Nets were introduced in the doctoral dissertation by K.A. Petri, titled "Kommunikation mit Automaten" and published in 1962 by University of Bonn. Petri Nets are graphical (the intuitive graphical modeling language) and mathematical (advanced formal analysis method) tool. The concurrence of performed actions is the natural phenomenon due to which Petri Nets are perceived as mathematical tool for modeling concurrent systems. The main idea of this theory was modified by many researchers according to their needs, owing to the unusual "flexibility" of this theory. The present monograph focuses on Petri Nets applications in two main areas: manufacturing (section 1) and computer science (section 2). These two areas have still huge influence on our lives and our world. The theory of Petri Nets is still developing: some directions of investigations are presented in section 3. And at the end there is section 4 including some infesting facts concerning application of Petri Nets in the public area: the analysis and control of public bicycle sharing systems. The monograph shows the results of research works performed with use of Petri Nets in science centers all over the world.

Abstract

The aim of this book is to present qualitative aspects of logistics operations and supply chain management which help to implement the sustainable policy principles in the companies and public sector’s  institutions. Authors in individual chapters  address the issues related to reverse network configuration, forward and reverse supply chain integration, CO2 reduction in transportation, improvement of the  production operations and management of the recovery activities. Some best practices from different countries and industries are presented. This book will be valuable to both academics and practitioners wishing to deepen their knowledge in the field of logistics operations and management with regard to sustainability issues.

Abstract

The 11th International Symposium on Distributed Computing and Artificial Intelligence 2014 (DCAI 2014) is a forum to present applications of innovative techniques for studying and solving complex problems. The exchange of ideas between scientists and technicians from both the academic and industrial sector is essential to facilitate the development of systems that can meet the ever-increasing demands of today’s society. The present edition brings together past experience, current work and promising future trends associated with distributed computing, artificial intelligence and their application in order to provide efficient solutions to real problems. This year’s technical program presents both high quality and diversity, with contributions in well-established and evolving areas of research (Algeria, Brazil, China, Croatia, Czech Republic, Denmark, France, Germany, Ireland, Italy, Japan, Malaysia, Mexico, Poland, Portugal, Republic of Korea, Spain, Taiwan, Tunisia, Ukraine, United Kingdom), representing a truly “wide area network” of research activity. DCAI'14 Special Sessions have been a very useful tool in order to complement the regular program with new or emerging topics of particular interest to the participating community. Special Sessions that emphasize on multi-disciplinary and transversal aspects, such as AI-driven methods for Multimodal Networks and Processes Modeling and Multi-Agents Macroeconomics have been especially encouraged and welcome. This symposium is organized by the Bioinformatics, Intelligent System and Educational Technology Research Group of the University of Salamanca. The present edition was held in Salamanca, Spain, from 4th to 6th June 2014.

Abstract

This book describes a variety of teaching and academic research applications that effectively utilize FlexSim to: (1) provide guidelines, methods and tools for simulation modeling and analysis in a variety of educational settings and (2) address a variety of important design and operational issues in industry. Simulation is increasingly proving to be an important tool for supporting decision-making and problem-solving processes in many disparate domains, including the design, management and improvement of a wide range of operations systems in manufacturing, logistics, healthcare, etc. Achieving resource efficiency and minimizing negative externalities from operations represent two of today’s greatest challenges; modern simulation methods can help to overcome them. FlexSim is a prominent software package for developing discrete-event, agent-based, continuous, and hybrid simulations.
