Under the UK Labour Government (1997-2001) there have been clear signs of a willingness to revive the 'pastoral' curriculum in schools and to develop stronger links between the health and eductaion sectors. This book, based on empirical work undertaken in England and throughout Europe, explores such government policy and in particular the development of the health promoting school. The authors provide a detailed examination of the health promoting school movement in Europe, including application of concepts, policies, research and practice to the National Healthy Schools Standards in Englan

The present book is an in-depth synopsis of recent advances in the fragile X field. The fragile X syndrome (FXS) is the most common form of inherited mental retardation, and the molecular-genetic basis of this syndrome has been the subject of extensive experimental scrutiny over the last two decades. This book covers the spectrum of current FXS research, ranging from Drosophila model systems via mouse models to clinical and psychiatric aspects. The volume also provides updates on FXS-related diseases such as the fragile X-associated tremor/ataxia syndrome. Significant progress in recent years, as highlighted here by some of the most eminent researchers in the field, are grounds for optimism that successful therapeutical approaches may be feasible in the not too distant future.

Though diverse, the Arab world boasts a unique culture and native language, both of which are unlike those found in English-speaking countries. Perhaps due to the nature of these differences, Arab-Western relations have been described as existing on one of the world's great cultural fault-lines. Debate about the potential effects, both positive and negative, of English-medium education and the learning of English in the region's schools and universities is one expression of this. Even as deba...

This book explores an area that has been somewhat overlooked in the literature to date – the current status and future trends of English education in Oman. It offers a variety of theoretical and methodological approaches to the subject and explores areas of English education in Oman that have, until now, been little investigated. It explores these issues from a variety of perspectives: the professionalization of English teachers in the country; the implementation of novel teaching methodologies, curricula, and assessment approaches, into what are, in many ways, still very traditional education settings; the integration of learner identity into English language instruction; country- and culture-specific concerns with conducting research with Omani participants; the strategic demands of building stronger links between education and workforce needs; and developing learner autonomy and motivation.

"The story of the Revolutionary War in the northern colonies is well known but the war that raged across the South in 1780-1781--considered by some the 'unknown Revolution'--included some of the most important yet least studied engagements. Drawing extensively on their letters, this book follows the campaigns of General Nathanael Greene and Lord Charles Cornwallis as they fought across the Carolinas, offers a compelling look at their leadership. The theater of war the two commanders entered in was populated by various ethnic and religious groups and separated geographically, economically and politically into the low country and the mountainous backcountry, setting the stage for what was to come"--

Concentrating mainly on the process philosophy developed by Alfred North Whitehead, this series of essays brings together some of the newest developments in the application of process thinking to the physical and social sciences. These essays, by established scholars in the field, demonstrate how a wider and deeper understanding of the world can be obtained using process philosophical concepts, how the distortions and blockages inevitably inherent in substantivist talk can be set aside, and how new and fertile lines of research in the sciences can be opened as a result.
