Abstract

This study examines the form and reception of mystical writing in poetry by Anna de Noailles (France, 1876–1933), Ernestna de Champourcin (Spain 1905–1999), and Antonia Pozzi (Italy, 1912–1938) from the perspective of current transsecular approaches, cultural studies mysticism research, and feminist literary studies, making original links to (neo-)vitalist philosophy.

Abstract

The menstrual product industry has played a large role in shaping the last hundred years of menstrual culture, from technological innovation to creative advertising, education in classrooms and as employers of thousands in factories around the world. How much do we know about this sector and how has it changed in later decades? What constitutes 'the industry', who works in it, and how is it adapting to the current menstrual equity movement?Cash Flow provides a new academic study of the menstrual corporate landscape that links its twentieth-century origins to the current 'menstrual moment'. Drawing on a range of previously unexplored archival materials and interviews with industry insiders, each chapter examines one key company and brand: Saba in Norway, Essity in Sweden, Tambrands in the Soviet Union, Procter & Gamble in Britain and Europe, Kimberly-Clark in North America, and start-ups Clue and Thinx. By engaging with these corporate collections, the book highlights how the industry has survived as its consumers continually change.

Abstract

The volume gathers eleven contributions on the origins, evolution and function of female models in Western culture, from Greco-Roman texts to medieval and Renaissance literature. Organized in four thematic blocks, the book intends to elucidate how misogynistic discourse and its opposite are constructed in literary and didactical works dealing with feminine archetypes.

Abstract

The study provides a close analysis of literary works by women in late-18th- and early-19th-century Russia, with a focus on Anna Naumova, Mariia Pospelova, and Mariia Bolotnikova. Political, social and feminist theories are applied to examine restrictions imposed on women. Women authors in particular were fettered by a culture of feminisation strongly influenced by the French philosopher Jean-Jacques Rousseau. As Sentimentalism and its aesthetics began to give way to Romantic ideals, some provincial Russian women writers saw an opportunity to claim social equality, and to challenge traditional concepts of authorship and a view of women as mute and passive.

Abstract

When the benefits of surgery do not outweigh the harms or where they do not clearly do so, surgical interventions become morally contested. Cutting to the Core examines a number of such surgeries, including infant male circumcision and cutting the genitals of female children, the separation of conjoined twins, surgical sex assignment of intersex children and the surgical re-assignment of transsexuals, limb and face transplantation, cosmetic surgery, and placebo surgery.
