The last decade has witnessed a global explosion of immigrant protests, political mobilizations by irregular migrants and pro-migrant activists. This volume considers the implications of these struggles for critical understandings of citizenship and borders. Scholars, visual and performance artists, and activists explore the ways in which political activism, art, and popular culture can work to challenge the multiple forms of discrimination and injustice faced by "illegal" and displaced peoples. They focus on a wide range of topics, including desire and neo-colonial violence in film, visibility and representation, pedagogical function of protest, and the role of the arts and artists in the explosion of political protests that challenge the precarious nature of migrant life in the Global North. They also examine shifting practices of boundary making and boundary taking, changing meanings and lived experiences of citizenship, arguing for a noborder politics enacted through a "noborder scholarship."--

Questions over immigration and asylum face almost all Western countries. Should only economically useful immigrants be allowed? What should be done with unwanted or 'illegal' immigrants? In this bold intervention, Alexandra Hall shows that immigration detention centres offer a window onto society's broader attitudes towards immigrants. Despite periodic media scandals, remarkably little has been written about the everyday workings of this system, or about the people responsible for setting immigration policy. Detention, particularly, is a hidden side of border politics, despite its growing international importance as a tool of control and security. This book also looks at the social life and the relationships between officers and immigrants to explore broad social trends, as well as resistance within the system, and provides rare insights into the treatment of the 'other'.

Le présent volume, sous la coordination de Jean-Yves CARLIER et Sylvie SAROLÉA, reprend en substance les exposés de la formation en droit des étrangers dispensée par la Commission Université-Palais. L’étranger étant le « non-national », Bernadette RENAULD présente les évolutions du code de la nationalité et des pratiques en la matière. Un deuxième texte, rédigé par Jean-Yves CARLIER et Sylvie SAROLÉA analyse de façon détaillée les différents statuts administratifs des étrangers en ce compris les recours possibles. Ce texte est complété par une présentation des possibilités de régularisation des étrangers (procédure dite « 9.3 »), sous la plume de Jean-Pierre JACQUES. Steve GILSON et Mikaël GLORIEUX donnent un aperçu actualisé et didactique du droit de l’aide sociale des étrangers, tant en ce qui concerne le droit à l’intégration sociale que l’aide sociale sensu stricto. L’ensemble de ces contributions, écrites par des praticiens et des théoriciens, donne les éléments de compréhension et les outils d’application du droit des étrangers, matière complexe et mouvante.
