Abstract

What makes up a public, what governs dominant discourses, and in which ways can counterpublics be created through narrative? This edited collection brings together essays on affect and narrative theory with a focus on the topics of gender and sexuality. It explores the power of narrative in literature, film, art, performance, and mass media, the construction of subjectivities of gender and sexuality, and the role of affect in times of crisis. By combining theoretical, literary, and analytical texts, the contributors offer methodological impulses and reflect on the possibilities and limitations of affect theory in cultural studies.

Abstract

"This book compares perspectives on gender equality and diversity in Norway and Japan, focusing on family, education, media and technology, sexuality and reproduction, and literature as seen through a gendered lens. What can we learn from a comparison between two countries who stand in significant contrast to each other with respect to gender equality? Norway and Japan differ in terms of historical, cultural and socioeconomic backgrounds. Most importantly, Japan lags far behind Norway when it comes to the World Economic Forum's Gender Gap Report. Rather than taking a narrow approach which takes as its starting point the assumption that Norway has so much "more" to offer in terms of gender equality, the authors attempt to show that a comparative perspective of two countries in the West and East can be of mutually benefit to both contexts in the advancement of gender equality. The interdisciplinary team of researchers contributing to this book cover a range of contemporary topics in gender equality and diversity including; fatherhood and masculinity, teaching and learning in Gender Studies education, cultural depictions of gender, technology, trans experiences and feminism. This unique collection is suitable for researchers and students in gender studies, sociology, Japan Studies and European Studies"--

Abstract

The women's movement was not only a place of political debate - a large number of activists spent most of their time among women. While "respectability" played a significant role in these circles the gradually growing distinction between homo- and heterosexual relationships - popularized by sexology since the second half of the 19th century - placed the intimate relationships within the women's movement into new normative contexts. Elisa Heinrich both examines the discursive negotiation of female homosexuality by women's activists and sheds light on the conditions and consequences of this significant transition.

Abstract

Few crimes capture the interest and attention of the public as sexual driven crime. Relapsing sex offenders especially spark debates on how best to deal with this particular group. Incidents of serious sexual crimes are, fortunately, rare in Germany which partly complicates empirical research into sexual criminality. This study aims to contribute to an understanding of sexual crimes by providing an overview of such offences in Germany by nature of the offence, offender-types, penalties and (partially) criminal careers from the perspective of judicial oversight of sexual crime. The study examines 9,430 sexual offenders from all over Germany based on data from the Federal Central Criminal Register where either custodial sentences were served or non-custodial sanctions imposed in the base year. It tracks the sample group over six years comparing their outcomes with other non-sexual offender types.

Abstract

"This book is available as open access through the Bloomsbury Open programme and is available on www.bloomsburycollections.com. Why do we have sex education? For whom does it exist, and who is it against? This book explores these questions, ultimately calling into question the very existence of sex education itself. The analysis is centred on the marginalised lives of sex workers. This focus allows us to see sex education and sex work in a new light and provides insights into the implications of sex education in public schools and teacher education. By considering the relationship between sex education and sex work, Caitlin Howlett reveals the way in which sex education exists as a form of state violence, and continues to maintain close ties to sexism, racism, colonialism, and capitalism. Drawing on Foucauldian genealogy, feminist history, epistemology, post-humanism, and queer of color critique, Howlett calls for an end to sex education as a federally funded project and argues for new pedagogical approaches to educating about sex, gender, and sexuality in schools"--
