Gaukler, Zigeuner, Barden, Juden, Narren und Intellektuelle - alle haben sie eines gemeinsam: Sie sind Nomaden. Außerhalb ›bürgerlicher‹ Normen, ungebunden, häufig die eigene Behausung auf dem Rücken, bewegen sie sich durch Zeit und Raum. Freilich bleiben manche Bindungen bestehen, wie Prägungen oder tradierte Verhaltensmuster; bleibt der Wanderer angewiesen auf Sterne, Landmarken und Relationen, um sich orientieren zu können. Um diese Fixpunkte, im Sinne von Strukturen, Formularen und Relationen, aber auch um Denktraditionen und erfundene Geschichten, geht es in dieser Aufsatzsammlung, die interdisziplinäre Arbeiten aus den Bereichen Soziologie, Geschichte, Philosophie und Literaturwissenschaft in sich vereinigt. Die Autoren analysieren und sind häufig selbst Wanderer durch den Kosmos abendländischer Intellektualkultur.

Looking at the development of cultural identity in the global context, this text uses the approach of historical anthropology. It examines the way in which the West Indian Community of Nevis, has, since the 1600s, incorporated both African and European cultural elements into the framework of social life, to create an Afro-Caribbean culture that was distinctive and yet geographically unbounded - a ""global culture"".
