Abstract

Cachexia may well represent the flip side of the tremendous achievements of modern medicine. Many diseases rapidly leading patients to death just a few years ago, are now better controlled by new therapies, and even if we cannot cure and eradicate them, their natural history has significantly increased by months and years. Although these new therapeutic strategies represent a remarkable advantage over the standards of care, it is impossible to ignore that many more patients are now facing the nutritional consequences of prolonged immunological and metabolic challenges deriving from ongoing diseases and aggressive therapies. Aim of the volume, written by world-renowned scientists, is to provide the best available evidence on the pathogenesis, clinical features and therapeutic approach of cachexia, and to facilitate the understanding of the complex yet unequivocal clinical role of this syndrome, that truly represents a disease, or, better still, a disease within other different diseases.

Abstract

Through a unique presentation of clinical photographs and accompanying histologic photomicrographs, Clinical and Pathological Aspects of Skin Diseases in Endocrine, Metabolic, Nutritional and Deposition Disease provides the practicing surgical pathologist, dermatologist, endocrinologist, internal medicine physician and dermatopathologist with a single volume source that reviews the clinical and pathologic features of metabolic and endocrine disorders that display cutaneous manifestations. Color photographs are presented for each condition followed by a series of phoromicrographs depicting each entity microscopically. The text includes Clinical Features, Pathology, Etiopathogenesis, Differential Diagnosis and Therapy for all entities, described in a clear, concise style. In-depth discussions of the clinical findings, as well as the histologic features of these diseases are included. Additionally, laboratory data used to make and support the diagnoses is discussed for each entity. The first section covers metabolic disorders that have cutaneous manifestations. Diseases organized by the endocrine organ primarily responsible for the systemic condition are covered. For each entity, an atlas of clinical manifestations is presented that will serve as a “bed-side” clinical reference, followed by a series of photomicrographs depicting the histologic changes. This unique format of presentation is followed throughout the volume in the second through fourth sections addressing Metabolic Diseases, Nutritional Disorders that affect the skin and finally Cutaneous Deposition Disorders. Clinical and Pathological Aspects of Skin Diseases in Endocrine, Metabolic, Nutritional and Deposition Disease is a unique reference for the practicing dermatopathologist, general pathologist reviewing skin biopsies, general dermatologists, internists and endocrinologists.

Abstract

Cardiovascular diseases continue to be the leading cause of death in the - jority of industrialized countries. The most frequent underlying pathology, namely atherosclerosis, and its clinical sequelae, namely coronary heart d- ease, cerebrovascular disease and peripheral artery disease, remain common although for a long time we have been made aware of avoidable or mo- ?able etiological factors such as smoking, fat-rich diet or lack of exercise, and although these adverse lifestyle factors have been extensively addressed by population-wide primary prevention programs. Cardiovascular morbidity and mortality also remain high despite successful anti-hypertensive and lipid lowering drug therapies which help to reduce cardiovascular morbidity and mortality by about 30% in both secondary and tertiary prevention settings. This can partly be explained by the increasing life expectancy and growing p- portionofelderly people, especiallyinEuropeandNorthAmerica. Inaddition, the World Health Organization makes the alarming prediction that probably in response to the spreading of western dietary behavior and lack of exercise resulting in an increasing prevalence of diabetes, dyslipidemia and hypert- sion, cardiovascular diseases rather than infectious diseases will become the most frequent cause of death worldwide. This volume of the Handbook of Experimental Pharmacology entitled “Atherosclerosis” is divided into four parts and intends to give an overview on the pathogenesis of atherosclerosis, established treatment and prevention regimen, and of perspectives for the development of new treatment modalities.
