Abstract

In political and media debates, questions of societal homogeneity and heterogeneity are discussed using the keyword "parallel societies." The open concept of "parasocieties" in this volume sets itself in opposition to this reductionist gesture, thereby enabling a differentiated understanding of media reflections upon socio-political and societal interactions with diversity in the present day.

Abstract

The present study examines Kalimpong and the surrounding border areas of the eastern Himalayas as a paradigmatic case of a "contact zone". In the colonial period as well as in the early post-colonial era, this space enabled a variety of encounters: between (British) India, Tibet and China, but also Nepal and Bhutan; between Christian mission and the religions of the Himalayas; between global flows of money and information and local markets and practices. Using a wealth of local and global historical sources, each contribution traces the paths of actors from different cultural backgrounds and examines the new forms of knowledge and practices that emerged from their encounters and their shifting power relations.

Abstract

This book critically examines multiple ways in which cultural diversity is represented and handled in a variety of contexts, from the artistic to the scientific, from the political to the theatrical, in media, fashion and everyday life, today as well as in the past. By drawing from the observation that specific socio-cultural features are made relevant to create asymmetries and hierarchies between individuals, groups and cultural resources, the volume questions, on the one hand, contingent processes of regulation, standardization, and homogenization of diversity. It points at contradictory processes of in- and exclusion related to the construction of differences between the Self and the Other in processes of doing culture. On the other hand, it recognizes and emphasizes the fluidity of cultural entanglements by adopting a transcultural perspective, which unifies the variety of the topics and of the contexts covered by the chapters, as well as their inter- and transdisciplinarity. While processes such as globalization, decolonization, migration, and mediatization have contributed to place diversity at the centre-stage of both scholarly and non-scholarly debates, this book invites to re-think norms, practices and negotiations of diversity and otherness through a variety of narrations, standardizations, imaginations, and negotiations. By emphasizing the contrast between emancipatory vs. standardizing approaches to diversity and otherness it also invites to "transculturalize" the study and the politics of culture.

Abstract

During the 2000s, the European Union has witnessed a significant change in terms of integration policies for immigrants. Countries like Sweden and the Netherlands, who were both pioneers of multicultural policies in Europe both significantly limited such policies in the late 1990s. Restrictive measures, requiring higher levels of integration in order to access and maintain legal statuses, have been enacted by most Western European countries since then, especially after 9/11. In October 2010, in a very polemic context on immigration and immigrant integration, the German Chancellor, Angela Merkel, announced that Germany was to be considered a multicultural failure, words that were soon echoed by the Belgian Prime Minister Yves Leterme, the British Prime Minister David Cameron and the French President Nicolas Sarkozy. These sensational statements, which by and large avoid defining the concept of multiculturalism, are based on a reaffirmation of "Western values" and strengthening of national identity. These statements express the need to review the policies on integration of immigrants, in the sense that they should be more active and voluntarist, more organized by the state and more supported by the EU. In the background, one can see fear for Islamic extremism, but also the idea that the nation states can put some obligations on immigrants, and that for a too long time we have been focusing on "those who arrive", rather than on "the society that welcomes them". This book intends to address the relationship between, on the one hand, cultural diversity resulting from migration, and, on the other hand, social cohesion and social justice within Western societies.

Abstract

At the youth center z6 in Innsbruck emerges a streetdance scene at beginning of 1990. Most of the dancers are children of the first immigrant worker generation. This work focuses on streetdance and which impact it had on the dancers and as well on the local subculture. The memories of the ex-dancers build the center and are contextualized to the present in the sense of the cultural science analysis of the consciousness. The main interest is how dancing shapes the identity beyond cultural stereotypes and stigmatizing, because dancing is political.; Im Jugendzentrum z6 in Innsbruck entsteht Anfang der 1990er Jahre eine Streetdancegruppe.

Abstract

This remarkable study develops a theoretical critique of contemporary discourses on secularism and assimilation, arguing that the perspective of assimilating distinct religious minorities by incorporating them into a secular and supposedly neutral public sphere may be self-subverting. To flesh out this insight, Jansen draws on the paradoxes of assimilation as experienced by the French Jews in the late 19th century through a contextualised reading of Proust's In Search of Lost Time. She proposes a dynamic, critical multiculturalism as an alternative to discourses focusing on secularism, assimilation and integration.
