Golden Age departures in historiography and theory of history in some ways prepared the ground for modern historical methods and ideas about historical factuality. At the same time, they fed into the period's own "aesthetic-historical culture" which amalgamated fact and fiction in ways modern historians would consider counterfactual: a culture where imaginative historical prose, poetry and drama self-consciously rivalled the accounts of royal chroniclers and the dispatches of diplomatic envoys; a culture dominated by a notion of truth in which skilful construction of the argument and exemplarity took precedence over factual accuracy. Literature and Historiography in the Spanish Golden Age: The Poetics of History investigates this grey area backdrop of modern ideas about history, delving into a variety of Golden Age aesthetic-historical works which cannot be satisfactorily described as either works of literature or works of historiography but which belong in between these later strictly separate categories. The Bibliographica Judaica Archive in Frankfurt am Main has spent decades gathering the biobibliographical data of about 20,000 German Jewish personalities. This unique data stock is now available on De Gruyter’s ABJ – German Judaism Online database. This supplementary volume provides an introduction to the history of the archive's origins and to its significance in the history of scholarship.

In "Poetics", Aristotle accepts history as one of the possible themes for poetry, on condition that the poet reaches the universal level by narrating events that respect the rules of the eikos and anankaion. By altering the history of Athens in the "Menexenus" dialogue and Solon's poem about Atlantis in the "Critias" dialogue, Plato precedes Aristotle's reflection and attributes to the historical narrative a central role in the paideia of citizens. In the fifth century Greek poetry of historical subject, from the passage "The Persians" by Aeschylus to the poem "The Persians" by Timothy of Miletus, anticipated and put into practice the themes that Plato and Aristotle would later discuss on the theoretical level, namely: intertwining between the particular of the story and the universal of poetry, the models for mimesis, the reaction of the public ranging from eleos, phobos and geloion.

Poetry expressing criticism of social, political and cultural life is a vital integral part of Persian literary history. Its principal genres - invective, satire and burlesque - have been very popular with authors in every age. Despite the rich uninterrupted tradition, such texts have been little studied and rarely translated. Their irreverent tones range from subtle irony to crude direct insults, at times involving the use of outrageous and obscene terms. This anthology includes both major and minor poets from the origins of Persian poetry (10th century) up to the age of Jami (15th century), traditionally considered the last great classical Persian poet
