What is the use of research in public debates and policy-making on immigration and integration? Why are there such large gaps between migration debates and migration realities, and how can they be reduced? 'Bridging the Gaps' provides a unique set of testimonies and analyses of these questions by researchers and policy experts who have been deeply involved in attempts to link social science research to public policies. 'Bridging the Gaps' argues that we must go beyond the prevailing focus on the research-policy nexus by considering how the media, public opinion, and other dimensions of public debates can interact with research and policy-processes.

"Despite many scholars noting the interdisciplinary approach of Aboriginal knowledge production as a methodology within a broad range of subjects including quantum mathematics, biodiversity, sociology and the humanities - the academic study of Indigenous knowledge and people is struggling to become interdisciplinary in its approach and move beyond its current label of Indigenous Studies. Indigenous Knowledge Production specifically demonstrates the use of autobiographical ethnicity as a methodological approach, where the writer draws on lived experience and ethnic background towards creative and academic writing. Indeed, in this insightful volume, Marcus Woolombi Waters investigates the historical connection and continuity that have led to the present state of hostility witnessed in race relations around the world; seeking to further ones understanding of the motives and methods that have led to a rise in white supremacy associated with ultra-conservatism.Above all, Indigenous Knowledge Production aims to deconstruct the cultural lens applied within the West which denies the true reflection of Aboriginal and Black consciousness, and leads to the open hostility witnessed across the world. This monograph will appeal to undergraduate and postgraduate students, as well as postdoctoral researchers, interested in fields such as Sociology of Knowledge, Anthropology, Cultural Studies, Ethnography and Methodology."--Provided by publisher.

Beyond Black is Ellis Cashmore's compelling appraisal of the impact of black celebrities on the cultural landscape of post-Obama America. In recent years a new variety of African American celebrity has emerged: acquisitive, ambitious, flamboyantly successful and individualistic - the kind of people who are interested in channelling their energies into their own careers rather than causes like racism. ... At the centre of this book lies the question, "do the conspicuously successful and glittering new class of African Americans herald a new post-racial age?" Cashmore's answer takes him to the minstrel shows of the nineteenth century, the Hollywood film industry of the 1930s and today's hip-hop culture. The most valuable product these celebrities sell, according to Cashmore, is a particular conception of America: as a nation where racism has been - if not banished - rendered insignificant. The lives they lead deliver the evidence. Does racism even matter when almost anyone can possess the commodities associated with the celebrities with whom they identify?

Explores experiences and strategies of tidewater Virginia Indians, descendants of peoples of the seventeenth-century Algonquian Powhatan chiefdom, in maintaining, creating, and re-creating their identities as Native Americans from the 1850s through the 'Jim Crow' era. Examines how tidewater Native individuals, families, and communities positioned themselves as Indigenous Peoples, rather than Black or white, in an era when some white Virginians argued that Virginia's Indians were 'mulattoes' and 'colored people.'

This open access book explores how contemporary integration policies and practices are not just about migrants and minority groups becoming part of society but often also reflect deliberate attempts to undermine their inclusion or participation. This affects individual lives as well as social cohesion. The book highlights the variety of ways in which integration and disintegration are related to, and often depend on each other. By analysing how (dis)integration works within a wide range of legal and institutional settings, this book contributes to the literature on integration by considering (dis)integration as a highly stratified process. Through featuring a fertile combination of comparative policy analyses and ethnographic research based on original material from six European and two non-European countries, this book will be a great resource for students, academics and policy makers in migration and integration studies.
