Aimed at an interdisciplinary audience (philosophy, psychology and neuroscience), this book is about mental imagery and the important work it does in our mental life. Mental imagery plays a crucial role in the vast majority of our perceptual episodes; but also plays an important role in emotions, action execution and even in our desires.

Imagination will remain a mystery - we will not be able to explain imagination - until we can break it into parts we already understand. 'Explaining Imagination' is a guidebook for doing just that, where the parts are other ordinary mental states like beliefs, desires, judgments and decisions.

How to account for the peculiar attraction of certain photos? How to deal with the specific use of images in particular contexts? Monika Schwärzler presents a variety of photographic case studies exploring visual phenomena from the point of view of media analysis as well as from sociological, aesthetic, and psychoanalytic perspectives. The topics range from a new reading of Thomas Struth's street photographs to CERN photos with their charged rhetoric, from the assault of photographic close-ups to speculations on an anonymous slide collection featuring a woman with an ever-present white handbag. The book is intended for an audience receptive to the analytical appeal of images, prepared to go beyond what can be taken at face value.

This book proposes a novel deep learning based detection method, focusing on vehicle detection in aerial imagery recorded in top view. The base detection framework is extended by two novel components to improve the detection accuracy by enhancing the contextual and semantical content of the employed feature representation. To reduce the inference time, a lightweight CNN architecture is proposed as base architecture and a novel module that restricts the search area is introduced.
