Abstract

"Orlando is known internationally as a tourist destination, attracting fifty million visitors each year to its numerous resorts and parks. In all that excitement it's easy to overlook the city's interesting past. In the 1800s, the area was embroiled in the Seminole Wars, and Fort Gatlin was constructed to shield citizens from attacks. Soon, a city grew around the fort. During the cowboy era, thousands of cattle, ranchers and cowboys crossed the central Florida terrain moving livestock. Those pioneers soon moved to farming, and Orlando became the center of the Florida citrus industry. Join author and historian James C. Clark as he reveals the remarkable history of one of the world's most popular destinations"-- "A brief history of Orlando, Florida"--

Abstract

Can ownership of culture make sense? The interest in bringing cultural property to the market or preventing it and thereby creating collective or individual, ideological or economic profit is shaped by the strongly divergent conditions that actors find in a postcolonial, late modern world. The interdisciplinary DFG research group on the constitution of cultural property has been shedding light on this question, which has been dealt with in the public eye for a number of years. The research group asks about the constitution of cultural property in the area of tension between cultural, economic, legal and hereby also socio-political discourses. This also necessitates the new collaboration in this focused form of specialists from the cultural and social sciences as well as law and economics. The diversity of disciplinary access to a research area is shown just as clearly in the first results from ongoing research conveyed in this volume, as is the need to bring disciplinary points of view together in a joint effort in order to understand the process of constituting cultural property.

Abstract

Conquering Sicily from the middle of the 11th century, Hauteville are the first to set up a government that is defined as a Christian and, at least in part, from Latin, while exercising its prerogatives at a predominantly Muslim population, Arabic speaking. To do this, they gradually developed instruments of government, but also became the patrons of a cultural production that has aroused admiration and comments until today. This work is presented as an investigation into the different dimensions of the power of Hauteville from the conquest of Sicily at the end of the 12th century (language policy, state building, patronage, but also control of populations and territory). It aims to demystify the representations that we often have of this long century of "tolerance", but also to deconstruct the idea that the failure of the dynasty was written in advance. He nevertheless postulates that the "Norman" construction in Sicily remains original and innovative and that it provides useful elements of comparison for all those who analyze situations of conquest and minority government in a multicultural context.

Abstract

"The publications of the interdisciplinary and internationally networked Research Platform “World Order – Religion – Violence” seek to improve our understanding of the relationship between religion, politics and violence. It therefore deals especially with the return of religious themes and symbols into politics, with the analysis of the link between political theory and religion, and finally with the critical discussion of the secularization thesis. At the centre of the research are questions concerning the causes of violent conflict, the possibilities for a just world order and the conditions for peaceful coexistence on a local, regional, national and international/worldwide scale between communities in the face of divergent religious and ideological convictions. Its task is to initiate and coordinate thematically related research-efforts from various disciplinary backgrounds at the University of Innsbruck. It creates a network between departments, research-teams and single researchers working on topics of religion, politics and violence. The overall aim of the research platform World Order-Religion-Violence is to promote excellence in social and human science research on religion and politics at the University of Innsbruck and to guarantee the diffusion of this particular competence on a national and international level."
