This fifth volume of the series, Methods of Cancer Diagnosis, Therapy, and Prognosis, discusses in detail the diagnosis, treatment, and prognosis of Liver Cancer. Both standard and emerging therapies for this cancer, written by expert oncologists/pathologists in this field, are included. This fully illustrated volume: Is divided into 7 sections: Applications of Imaging, Resectable Liver Cancer, Unresectable Liver Cancer, Hepatocellular Cancer, Liver Colorectal Metastasis, Biliary Cancer, and Splenic Cancer. Discusses imaging modalities for diagnosis, treatment assessment, and prognosis. Includes descriptions of radial magnetic resonance imaging, helical computed tomography, magnetic resonance imaging, FDG-PET, contrast-enhanced sonography, multidetector-row computed tomography, and single photon emission computed tomography. Presents imaging methods for localized fibrous tumors of the liver, abdominal neoplasms, cholangiocarcinoma, gall bladder carcinoma, hepatic cellular carcinoma, extrahepatic disease, intrahepatic disease, focal liver lesions, biliary cystic tumors, extra hepatic bile duct carcinoma, and splenic metastases. Highlights methods for treatment of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) with thalidomide and transarterial treatment of hepatic malignancies. Discusses postoperative interferon alpha treatment of patients with HCC. Details the methods of immunohistochemistry, tissue microarray, and proteomic analysis for diagnosis and prognosis. The technological advances presented in this volume are expected to expedite new discoveries and their translation to clinical practice. The field of oncology will benefit the most from these advanced methods, as a combination of therapies and personalized medicine will improve early detection of liver cancer and other cancer types. Professor Hayat has summarized the problems associated with the complexities of research publications and has been successful in editing a must-read volume for oncologists, cancer researchers, medical teachers and students of cancer biology.

"Hepatic Caudate Lobe Resection" provides a comprehensive and up-to-date coverage of research on the surgical technique of caudate lobe resection. The book introduces all kinds of procedures for caudate lobe resection, from basic ones to the most complex ones. A new surgical dissection technique using a simple yet versatile instrument is introduced, which is of great help in facilitating the procedure and enhancing the safety of the operation. More than 350 pictures about the anatomy of the caudate lobe, the surgical procedure or special instruments are presented, and 18 different videos are demonstrated. It is a great reference for liver surgeons learning about caudate lobe resection, as well as researchers and postgraduate students in the fields of hepatobiliary surgery. Being an Honorary Fellow of American College of Surgeon and an Honorary Fellow of European Surgical Association, Dr. Shu You Peng is a professor at the Second Affiliated Hospital, and the Sir Run Run Shaw Hospital, School of Medicine, Zhejiang University, China. From pre-publication reviews: "This book, describing the most delicate hepatectomy in the center of the liver, will make easy the performance of the other hepatectomies of the left liver and the right liver. It is a perfect introduction to the liver surgery. It is like doing the Bechamel sauce: if you know it, all recipes will be easy." Professor Henri Bismuth, the founding President of ESA "This book is a 'must' for all liver surgeons who are interested to improve their knowledge and skills in complicated liver surgery." Professor Wan Yee Lau, the past President of IHPBA.

The management of colorectal liver metastases has evolved rapidly over the last decade with the introduction of newer and effective chemotherapies and a redefinition for cure. These range from the philosophical (including the greater awareness of treatment with curative intent), through the practical (more aggressive definition of respectability for cure and the use of more effective chemotherapies for both palliation and as adjuncts to surgery), to the futuristic use of biological strategies (including monoclonal antibodies and gene therapies) and lastly to the pragmatic but equally important issues of health economics (who is going to foot the bill for these increasingly expensive treatment strategies). Liver metastases addresses the contemporary multidisciplinary management of liver metastases. Throughout the text, experience from the paradigms of colorectal cancer metastases treatment strategies are used to point to new directions in the management of liver metastases from other cancers. This book overviews current understanding of the biology of liver metastases, and reviews current methods of detection and diagnosis. Chapters offer objective and systematic reviews of each of the current major treatment modalities: surgical resection; destructive therapies; chemotherapy (systemic and regional); whether there is a role for radiotherapy; biological therapies (including hormone treatment antibodies and gene therapy); and lastly the decision-making strategies that must be employed for successful multidisciplinary management. Featuring state-of-the-art reviews, key points, treatment algorithms and clear, concise illustrations this book provides the ultimate companion to anyone interested or working in the area of liver disease. This book will appeal to consultant and trainee surgeons in general surgery, hepatobiliary surgery, upper GI surgery, colorectal surgery; consultant and trainee medical and clinical oncologists with an interest in liver tumours; and consultant and trainee radiologists with an interest in liver disease.

Since a number of mucosal digestive tract cancer detected has increased in recent years with an advance of endoscopic instruments, endoscopic treatment of digestive tract cancer is widely spread in Japan but not in other countries. Minute cancers seem to have own characteristic mucosal signs compared with benign lesions. Therefore, strategies, those are different in Japan from other countries, of endoscopic diagnosis are very important. The cancer institute hospital of JFCR (Japan foundation of cancer research) is one of the top institutions which do the best endoscopic treatment in Japan. This book is expected to be the first valuable atlas in which the abundant experiences of this hospital offer beautiful photographs of minute cancers without any scars of biopsies which change aspects of original lesions. This book also offer pictures of magnifying endoscopy using NBI (Narrow Band Imaging) and pathological findings.

There have been many impressive advances in our understanding of the pathogenesis of gastric adenocarcinoma, gastric MALT lymphoma, gastrointestinal stromal tumors of the stomach, and gastric carcinoid tumors over the years. "The Biology of Gastric Cancers," edited by Dr. Timothy Wang, Dr. James Fox and Dr. Andy Giraud, pays homage to the cutting edge concepts of cancer stem cells, tumor microenvironment, chronic inflammation, and genetic susceptibility to cancer and represents the very first volume devoted to the subject of the basic biology of gastric cancer. With an emphasis on animal models, but also considerable attention to human studies, host genetics and the role of bacterial factors and other environmental factors influencing the pathogenesis of gastric cancer, the topics presented in this book should be of interest to clinicians and investigators interested in gastrointestinal cancer, as well as basic investigators in related areas of cancer research. This body of work will hopefully stimulate clinical and translational studies that will advance early diagnosis and treatment of gastric tumors.

As minimal access approaches to cancer diagnosis, staging, and therapy become more widely used, it is vital for general surgeons, along with laparoscopists, surgical oncologists and medical oncologists, to stay up to date. The editors, a team consisting of a renowned surgical oncologist and a laparoscopic specialist, aim to provide a resource for the practicing general surgeon using basic minimally invasive techniques. The book discusses diagnosis including biopsy with microinstrumentation, staging, and palliative and curative resection. Specific tumor sites are addressed, including esophagus, stomach, spleen, small bowel, pancreato-biliary, hepatic resection, and colo-rectal resection. Minimally invasive approaches to the thoracic and retroperitoneal areas are included. The book provides a thorough overview of basic cancer biology, instrumentation, and ultrasound. Additionally, Greene and Heniford explore controversial issues such as port-site recurrence and the effect of pneumoperitoneum on the spread of cancer cells in the abdomen. Many photographs and line drawings, including 16 in full color, illustrate the principles discussed in the text. A must-have for every practicing general surgeon, laparoscopic fellow, and general surgery resident.
