Abstract

The identification of all the friars active in Santa Maria Novella on a regular basis or only temporarily is a puzzling issue, due to the high mobility of Dominican friars as well as the complexities of the internal organization of the convent. This contribution offers a schematic chronology of the Florentine Dominican convent of Santa Maria Novella between 1291 and 1319. For each year, the prior, the main lector, the lector of the Sentences, the students, and other friars active in the convent are listed, together with further information about the major events taking place at the convent.

Abstract

Mechthild of Hackeborn represents medieval mysticism. Her Revelations were written down in the 1290s in Helfta, Germany. The oldest surviving versions are in Latin, but in the Middle Ages, the Revelations were translated at least into Dutch, English, Swedish, and German. The text was translated into Swedish in 1469 by Jöns Budde, a Bridgettine brother from Naantali. Budde made few omissions but many additions in the text, mainly explanations to meet the needs of the Bridgettine sisters. Budde's translation is faithful to the original text, and he made few mistakes. My Finnish translation of the text follows Budde's version where possible. However, Budde translated an abridged version that omitted some chapters, and the only surviving copy of Budde's translation is incomplete. I have therefore translated the missing sections from Latin and incorporated them in the text. My translation also includes editorial comments on the language, the contents, and the historical and theological contexts of the Revelations.

Abstract

The remains in Montefeltro of the material structures of the medieval mendicant orders still constitute a fresh archive of data useful for casting light on the formal and technological transformations that took place in the first two centuries of its history. The book looks for the first time into the type of settlements of the Franciscan and Augustinian orders through the historical, archaeological, historico-artistic and petrographic analysis of the elevations of six convents dating from the thirteenth and fourteenth centuries.

Abstract

In this study on the musical lives of nuns in colonial Latin America, author Cesar D. Favila argues that the sounds of cloisters were deemed essential for the promotion of the Immaculate Conception of the Virgin Mary and, by extension, the salvation of early modern society. Through analysis of these "immaculate sounds," rarely studied archival sources, rulebooks, devotional literature, and nun's biographies, Favila locates women's agency within a hierarchical society that silenced some women and required others to sing.

Abstract

"On October 16, 1943, the Jews of Rome were targeted for arrest and deportation. The Nazis, the Vatican, and the Jews of Rome examines why?and more importantly how?it could have been avoided, featuring new evidence and insight into the Vatican?s involvement. At the time, Rome was within reach of the Allies, but the overwhelming force of the Wehrmacht, Gestapo, and SS in Rome precluded direct confrontation. Moral condemnations would not have worked, nor would direct confrontation by the Italians, Jewish leadership, or even the Vatican. Gallo underscores the necessity of determining what courses of actions most likely would have spared Italian Jews from the gas chambers. Examining the historical context and avoiding normative or counterfactual assertions, this book draws upon archival sources ranging from diaries to intelligence intercepts in English, Italian, and German. With antisemitism on the rise today and the last remaining witnesses passing away, it is essential to understand what happened in 1943. The Nazis, the Vatican, and the Jews of Rome grapples with this particular, awful episode within the larger, horrifying story of the Holocaust. Despite the inadequacy of memory, we must continue to attempt to make sense of the inexplicable. "
