Abstract

This book addresses diverse aspects of signaling at all levels of plant organization, starting from single molecules; through vesicle recycling and organelles, dynamic actin cytoskeletons, and plant organs bending in response to sensory stimuli induced by abiotic cues such as gravity and light; up to the whole organism as related to its circadian clock or pathogen defense. Emphasis is placed on the integrative aspects of signaling, which foster our understanding of sensory and communicative plants in all their complexity.

Abstract

Apoptosis, Cell Signaling, and Human Diseases: Molecular Mechanisms, Volumes 1 and 2, present a concise synthesis of recent developments in the understanding of both cell survival and apoptotic pathways. Particular attention is given to apoptosis in human diseases, such as different forms of cancer and neurodegenerative diseases. These comprehensive volumes integrate the most innovative and current findings from several related disciplines of scientific research, including pathology, genetics, virology, cell biology, immunology, and molecular biology. Volume 1 is divided into two sections: “Malignant Transformation and Metastasis” and “Molecular Basis of Disease Therapy.” Volume 2 follows a similar structure and is divided into sections entitled “Kinases and Phosphate” and “Molecular Basis of Cell Death.” All of the contributors are at the forefront of scientific discovery, and the reviews they present systemically examine the most exciting and innovative aspects of their particular areas of expertise. Researchers will find these volumes of major benefit as they search for novel and more effective treatments for human diseases.

Abstract

All hollow organs, such as blood vessels, the gastrointestinal tract, airways, male and female reproductive systems, and the urinary bladder are primarily composed of smooth muscle. Such organs regulate flow, propulsion and mixing of luminal contents and storage by the contraction and relaxation of smooth muscle cells. Smooth muscle cells respond to numerous inputs, including pressure, shear stress, intrinsic and extrinsic innervation, hormones and other circulating molecules, as well as autocrine and paracrine factors. This book is a review of smooth muscle cell regulation in the cardiovascular, reproductive, GI, and other organ systems with emphasis on calcium and receptor signaling.

Abstract

Until recent years the production of reactive oxygen species (ROS) was generally considered to be a harmful process and a generator of oxidative stress. But more recently this concept has been re-evaluated and the term "oxidative signaling" was coined (Foyer and Noctor, 2005). This means that ROS generation is also an important component of the signaling network of plants. Results obtained during the last decade have highlighted that ROS are key regulators of plant metabolism, morphology and development which are also used by plants to respond to environmental challenges. The role of ROS as signals for gene expression has been established, and ROS also modulate the activity of key signaling compounds such as MAP kinases. The volume of research into the roles of ROS in plants is currently growing and the purpose of this book is to present recent advances in this field. The constitutive chapters are arranged around four main topics: - The generation of ROS and their network signaling, including the retrograde signaling from the chloroplast to the nucleus and the cross-talk with hormone signaling -The signaling role of ROS produced in some sub-cellular compartments -The role of ROS in plant growth, development, functioning and stress acclimation -Their role in biotic and abiotic interactions.

Abstract

R. A. J. Challiss assembles in Receptor Signal Transduction Protocols an outstanding collection of state-of-the-art methods from leading experts for interrogating ligand-receptor and receptor-effector interactions. These powerful methods emphasize the regulation of G-protein-coupled receptors and focus on receptor characterization, methods for investigating how receptors couple to G-proteins, and approaches to studying how receptor expression and function is regulated. Designed to be easily reproducible, the protocols offered include chimeric receptor construction, antibody generation, transient and stable transfection methods, in situ hybridization, as well as immunocytochemistry, functional assays of G-protein function, antisense methods for defining receptor-effector coupling pathways, and many more. Receptor Signal Transduction Protocols blends authoritative descriptions and applications of well-established methodologies with many novel techniques at the cutting edge of signal transduction research. The coverage cuts across disciplines and allows those already well-versed in one area to expand their repertoire of potent methods and broaden their research horizons. Every researcher interested in signal transduction today will find this richly practical guide indispensable.

Abstract

Transmembrane Signaling Protocols brings together a collection of practical, cutting-edge techniques for the study of cell signaling. Written by acknowledged leaders in the field, the protocols provide detailed, step-by-step instructions, helpful notes, and troubleshooting tips that make even the most powerful of the latest techniques readily reproducible. The protocols presented include the use of peptide libraries to study transmembrane signaling; the use of single-cell assays to analyze signal transduction pathways; the reconstitution of signaling complexes; methods for analyzing protein-protein interactions, and more. Introductory reviews explain the basic theory and enable researchers new to the area to rapidly gain understanding, as well as command of the practical knowledge and expertise afforded by the protocols. The time-tested techniques collected in Transmembrane Signaling Protocols make available to all researchers the many state-of-the-art techniques that have recently led to landmark discoveries in transmembrane signaling. The book is destined to become a standard resource for both conceptual information and the practical detail needed to carry out and interpret laboratory procedures in this dramatically advancing field.
