Breast Cancer is the most common tumor in women and it is the second leading cause of cancer deaths worldwide. Due to breakthroughs in gene profiling, the knowledge of the pathophysiology of the mammary gland had greatly increased over the last decade. In Breast Cancer in the Post Genomic Era, Antonio Giordano, Nicola Normanno, and a panel of international authorities in their field provide a comprehensive approach to the biology, diagnosis, prevention, and treatment of human breast carcinoma. The book provides a comprehensive approach to breast cancer, describing the use of gene profiling techniques to distinguish specific features of individual carcinomas, as well as emerging novel therapeutic approaches to treatment. Additional chapters cover the use of transgenic mice to model human breast cancer and the role of the EGF-CFC family in mammary gland development and neoplasia. Breast Cancer in the Post Genomic-Era succeeds in looking at breast cancer pathogenesis, diagnosis, and treatment under a more comprehensive light, and is a valuable resource for any Radiation or Surgical Oncologist, Cancer Biologist or Pathologist.

Few diseases have made more difference to our understanding of illness, the relation of the patient to the physician and other health care professionals, and the social context of disease than breast cancer. Breast cancer activism has provided a model of public policy advocacy for women, as well as for sufferers from other diseases, and even in causes unrelated to health. In many ways it has become emblematic of issues in women’s health. This volume offers a discursive analysis of breast cancer. From multiple perspectives—historical, philosophical, psychological, socio-political—these essays explore the competing narratives that have made breast cancer a contested site. It addresses debates about the autonomy of the patient in relation to the authority of the physician, as well as the importance of patient narratives in understanding disease. It analyzes the relation between the community and medical practice, particularly with regard to the effect of breast cancer activists and feminists on the medical understanding and treatment of breast cancer. And, it questions the intersection of medical science with political institutions and agencies of public policy in determining priorities of research and strategies of treatment.

Adjuvant treatment is administered prior to or as follow up to surgical procedures for breast cancer. Proven success in using medical therapies allowing for breast conserving procedures or reducing risk of occurrence. Although there has been much progress towards a cure, including the introduction of new targeted therapies, metastasizing cancer remains highly incurable. "The adjuvant treatment of breast cancer has become standard of care. A spectrum of biologic and prognostic factors are considered before a therapeutic strategy is implemented. In this text leading investigators in the field discuss current management and critical investigative issues." Steven T. Rosen, M.D. Series Editor.

This sixth volume in the series Methods of Cancer Diagnosis, Therapy, and Prognosis discusses Ovarian Cancer, Renal Cancer, Urogenitary Cancer, Urinary Bladder Cancer, Cervical Uterine Cancer, Skin Cancer, Leukemia, Multiple Myeloma and Sarcoma. Both standard and emerging therapies for these cancers, written by expert oncologists/pathologists in this field, are included. This fully illustrated volume Identifies biomarkers based on genetic alterations for clear cell ovarian adenocarcinoma. Identifies subgroups of ovarian cancer by using differential gene expression. Includes the application of the power-Doppler imaging for distinguishing benign from malignant complex adrenal masses in ovarian cancer. Emphasizes the advantage of using cytoreduction surgery for diagnosing advanced ovarian cancer. Provides details on the treatment of kidney cancer with radiofrequency ablation, surgery, and chemotherapy. Explains the use of immunohistochemistry for diagnosing adenomatoid tumor of the adrenal gland. Discusses the chemotherapy of testicular cancer and related second primary tumors. Includes the diagnosis of urothelial bladder cancer with urine-based tumor markers. Explains the use of immunohistochemistry and MRI for diagnosing uterine cervical cancer and describes the staging of this cancer using PET alone or PET/CT. Describes the localization of malignant melanoma using FDG-PET/CT. Explains the use of prognostic receptors for nonmelanoma skin cancer. Details the treatment of multiple myeloma using immunotherapy, radiotherapy, and targeted radionuclide therapy. Presents diagnostic immunohistochemistry of synovial and Kaposi's sarcoma. The technological advances presented in this volume are expected to expedite new discoveries and their translation to clinical practice. The field of oncology will benefit the most from these advanced methods, as a combination of therapies and personalized medicine will improve early detection of these different types of cancer. Professor Hayat has summarized the problems associated with the complexities of research publications and has been successful in editing a must-read volume for oncologists, cancer researchers, medical teachers and students of cancer biology.
