Abstract

From the mid-1980s, meat consumption in Italy and the western world have stabilised and, in the face of a well-established food security, we have witnessed a changed sensitivity for ethical issues, such as animal welfare and environmental impacts of farms. Analysing the sustainability of meat and cured meats means studying in the most objective way possible different topics concerning both the consumer and the livestock production. This volume presents an interdisciplinary study to describe the "5 faces" of meat sustainability: nutrition, environmental impacts and the circular economy applied to farms and industry, food security and animal welfare, the economic aspects of supply chains and the fight against food waste.

Abstract

Animal Welfare Management in Norway is about how authorities can best promote high standards of well-being and respect for animals. In Norway, the Norwegian Food Safety Authority has primary responsibility for ensuring that businesses and persons comply with animal welfare laws and regulations. This book presents the results of a unique research project on the effects of the Food Safety Authority's efforts within land-based food industries, in which key questions were: What kinds of regulatory measures and oversight are most effective? Is organizing all regulatory activity under one authority worthwhile? Is industry receptive to oversight? How can the authority utilize measures such as guidelines, warnings or punishment to best effect? This book provides new insight into challenges associated with animal welfare management, an area that has previously been under-researched in Norway. The book is geared toward persons with supervisory roles as well as those working in industries that handle animals, but it will also be of interest to anyone concerned with animal welfare or oversight in general. The book can also be relevant for instruction at the higher educational level. The contributors have backgrounds in political science, law, sociology, social anthropology, veterinary and other livestock-related fields, as well as inspection services. The book has been edited by Stig S. Gezelius, a professor at the University of South-Eastern Norway, and Frode Veggeland, a professor at the University of Oslo and senior researcher at the Norwegian Institute of Bioeconomy Research (NIBIO). The editors are experienced in research into public administration and implementation of legislation.

Abstract

Horse welfare issues are coming increasingly to the forefront of animal issues. A 2005 economic impact study indicated that there are over 9.2 million horses in the United States with over 4.6 million people involved as horse owners, service providers, employees and volunteers. Over the past few years, the US Congress has discussed bills related to the transportation and slaughter of horses as well as the sale of wild free-roaming horses and burros. Additionally, concerns over the production of pregnant mare's urine for hormone replacement therapy (PMU ranching) led to the establishment of groups who placed animals in new homes after ranches were closed. Welfare and anti-cruelty legislation for horses exists in the United States at both the federal and state levels as well as in other countries worldwide. This document contains a comprehensive bibliography and extensive selection of Web site resources. Two papers introducing horse care and welfare issues are also included. Dr. C. Stull of the University of California at Davis presents an overview of equine issues in the United States and Dr. D. Mills of the University of Lincoln gives an introduction to worldwide equine ethics and concerns. It is hoped that this information resource is a starting point for all people who care and work with horses.

Abstract

The material concerning the Animal Mutilation Project contains accounts of animal mutilations which were reported during the late 1970's. The FBI became involved when fifteen mutilations occurred in New Mexico. Various theories concerning the origins of the mutilations were explored by the FBI, including satanic cults, UFOs, pranksters, and natural predators. The investigation failed to identify any individuals responsible for the mutilations.
