This book addresses the shifting status of the humanities through a national case study spanning two centuries. The societal function of the humanities is considered from the flexible perspective of knowledge politics in order to historicize notions of impact and intellectual organization that tend to be taken for granted. The focus on modern Sweden enables an extended but still empirically coherent historical analysis, inviting critical comparisons with the growing literature on the history of the humanities from around the world. In the Swedish case, the humanities were instrumental to the construction of modern societal institutions, political movements, and professional education in the second half of the 19th century, while in the 20th century, the sense of future-making shifted towards science and medicine, and later technology and economy. The very rationale of the humanities was thus put under pressure as their social contract required novel negotiations. Their state and connections to society were nevertheless of a complex and ambiguous character, as is demonstrated by this volume whose contributions explore the many faces and places of the modern humanities.

The beginnings of the institutionalisation of qualitative educational and biographical research go back to 1978 and to representatives such as Dieter Baacke and Theodor Schulze, with whom qualitative research approaches found their way into educational science. Some forty years later, this volume takes a closer look at the paths of development from a theoretical and methodological perspective. What are the achievements? Which of the once formulated concerns have remained unfulfilled? What challenges, breaking points and turning points can be identified? The articles illuminate the ups, downs and upheavals of biographical pedagogy and qualitative-empirical research.

We live in a world of algorithmic sorting and decision-making. Mathematical models curate our social relationships, influence our elections and even decide whether we should go to prison or not. But how much do we really know about code, algorithmic structures and how they work? This book turns to questions of autonomy in the digital age from an interdisciplinary perspective, combining contributions from philosophy, education and cultural studies with computer science.

With the influence and pressures of the globalized economy, education systems are at a crossroads and need to find a place and/or identity that reflect new or transformed realities for learning environments. Questions such as to what extent, in what way, and how are we doing will need to be raised and answered before learning environments can begin the work necessary to create people who are ready to enter the globalized workforce. This book will present chapters written from a variety of perspectives to address the question "what is needed within systems of education to prepare the next generation of leaders for a competitive global environment?" The authors focus on such topics as online learning, technology, leadership, and English Language Learners to show the challenges to traditional educational practices and the ways in which learning environments are responding to the new reality of globalization.

This timely provides an invaluable analysis of the impact the Brexit decision has, and will have, on Britain's universities. International by nature, British universities draw their students and staff from across the global community. Britain is a major beneficiary of EU-sponsored research funding through the Horizon 2020 scheme and partnerships as part of the European Research Area. Britain's universities have world-leading reputations, with the UK sector second only to the United States in international prestige. Brexit has - already - affected this, with a drop in student recruitment from abroad and an increase in EU academics electing to leave the British university system. British Universities in the Brexit Moment offers the first book-length treatment of these issues. It situates the 'Brexit question' in the context of prevailing developments in UK higher education such as marketization and provides an indispensable guide to the material impacts of Brexit on Britain's universities.

"Enrique Dussel is considered one of the founding philosophers of liberation in the Latin American tradition, an influential arm of what is now called decoloniality. While he is astoundingly prolific, relatively few of his works can be found in English translation — and none of these focus specifically on education. Founding members of the Latin American Philosophy of Education Society David I. Backer and Cecilia Diego bring to us Dussel’s The Pedagogics of Liberation: A Latin American Philosophy of Education, the first English translation of Dussel’s thinking on education, and also the first translation of any part of his landmark multi-volume work Towards an Ethics of Latin American Liberation. Dssel’s ouevre is an impressive intellectual mosaic that uses Europeans to disrupt European thinking. This mosaic has at its center French philosopher Emmanuel Levinas, but also includes Ancient Greek philosophy, Thomist theology, modern Enlightenment philosophy, analytic philosophy of language, Marxism, psychoanalysis (Freud, Klein, evolutionary psychology, neuroscience), phenomenology (Sartre, Heidegger, Husserl, Hegel), critical theory (Frankfurt School, Habermas), and linguistics. Dussel joins these traditions to Latin American history, literature, and philosophy, specifically the work of Octavio Paz, Ivan Illich, and the philosophers of liberation whom Dussel studied with in Argentina before his exile to Mexico in the late 1970s.Drawing heavily from the ethics of Levinas, Dussel examines the dominating and liberating features of intimate, concrete, and observable interactions between different kinds of people who might sit down and have face-to-face encounters, specifically where there may be an inequality of knowledge and a responsibility to guide, teach, learn, care, or study: teacher–student, politician–citizen, doctor–patient, philosopher–nonphilosopher, and so on. Those occupying the superior position of these face-to-face encounters (teachers, politicians, doctors, philosophers) have a clear choice for Dussel when it comes to their pedagogics. They are either open to hearing the voice of the Other, disrupting their sense of what is and should be by a newness beyond what they know; or, following the dominant pedagogics, they can try to communicate and instruct their sense of what is and should be (which Dussel, in a Latin American context, associates with dominant cultures) to the (supposed) tabula rasas in their charge. Dussel calls that sense of what is and should be “lo Mismo.” [The French in Levinas is “le Même,” and Backer and Diego have translated Dussel’s “lo Mismo” as “the Same.”]This groundbreaking translation makes possible a face-to-face encounter between an Anglo Philosophy of Education and Latin American Pedagogics. “Pedagogics” should be considered as a type of philosophical inquiry alongside ethics, economics, and politics. Dussel’s pedagogics is a decolonizing pedagogics, one rooted in the philosophy of liberation he has spent his epic career articulating. With an Introduction by renowned philosopher Linda Martin Alcoff, this book adds an essential voice to our conversations about teaching, learning, and studying, as well as critical theory in general."
