State Formation and Radical Democracy in India analyzes one of the most important cases of developmental change in the twentieth century, namely, Kerala in southern India and begs the question of whether insurgency among the marginalized poor can use formal representative democracy to create better life chances. Going back to pre-independence, colonial India, Manali Desai takes a long historical view of Kerala and compares it with the state of West Bengal, which like Kerala has been ruled by leftists but has not had the same degree of success in raising equal access to welfare, lit

Aimed at information and communication professionals, scholars and students, Google and the Digital Divide: The Biases of Online Knowledge provides invaluable insight into the significant role that search engines play in growing the digital divide between individuals, organizations, and states. With a specific focus on Google, author Elad Segev explains the concept of the digital divide and the effects that today's online environment has on knowledge bias, power, and control. Using innovative methods and research approaches, Segev compares the popular search queries in Google and Yahoo in the United States and other countries and analyzes the various biases in Google News and Google Earth. Google and the Digital Divide shows the many ways in which users manipulate Google's information across different countries, as well as dataset and classification systems, economic and political value indexes, specific search indexes, locality of use indexes, and much more. Segev presents important new social and political perspectives to illustrate the challenges brought about by search engines, and explains the resultant political, communicative, commercial, and international implications.

"Screenwriting has been the subject of a wealth of popular literature that seeks to offer this work to all, to reveal the 'secrets' of screenwriting or to provide accounts of how to succeed in the mainstream screen production industries, primarily in Hollywood. But the deluge of How-to style manuals and interview collections offer little systematic analysis of the histories, practices, identities and subjects which form and shape the daily working lives of screenwriters. Screenwriting work demands particular and complex forms of subjectivity in order to distinguish it from other forms of filmmaking and writing, to make the work knowable and do-able. This book analyzes the ways in which screenwriters navigate and make sense of the labor markets in which they are immersed. Drawing on historical and critical perspectives of mainstream screenwriting in the USA and UK, as well as empirical data drawn from interviews, labour market and textual analysis, this book presents an original and multi-faceted case study of screenwriting as creative labor and professional practice. Using a range of theoretical approaches and an interdisciplinary methodological framework, it examines both the structural and subjective features of screenwriting work and it analyzes not only who has access to the work, but also who is excluded from this profession"--

Google is the most popular search engine ever created, but Google’s search capabilities are so powerful, they sometimes discover content that no one ever intended to be publicly available on the Web, including social security numbers, credit card numbers, trade secrets, and federally classified documents. Google Hacking for Penetration Testers, Third Edition, shows you how security professionals and system administratord manipulate Google to find this sensitive information and "self-police" their own organizations. You will learn how Google Maps and Google Earth provide pinpoint military accuracy, see how bad guys can manipulate Google to create super worms, and see how they can "mash up" Google with Facebook, LinkedIn, and more for passive reconnaissance. This third edition includes completely updated content throughout and all new hacks such as Google scripting and using Google hacking with other search engines and APIs. Noted author Johnny Long, founder of Hackers for Charity, gives you all the tools you need to conduct the ultimate open source reconnaissance and penetration testing. Third edition of the seminal work on Google hacking Google hacking continues to be a critical phase of reconnaissance in penetration testing and Open Source Intelligence (OSINT) Features cool new hacks such as finding reports generated by security scanners and back-up files, finding sensitive info in WordPress and SSH configuration, and all new chapters on scripting Google hacks for better searches as well as using Google hacking with other search engines and APIs

In the beginning, the World Wide Web was exciting and open to the point of anarchy, a vast and intimidating repository of unindexed confusion. Into this creative chaos came Google with its dazzling mission-"To organize the world's information and make it universally accessible"-and its much-"ed motto, "Don't be evil." In this provocative book, Siva Vaidhyanathan examines the ways we have used and embraced Google-and the growing resistance to its expansion across the globe. He exposes the dark side of our Google fantasies, raising red flags about issues of intellectual property and the much-touted Google Book Search. He assesses Google's global impact, particularly in China, and explains the insidious effect of Googlization on the way we think. Finally, Vaidhyanathan proposes the construction of an Internet ecosystem designed to benefit the whole world and keep one brilliant and powerful company from falling into the "evil" it pledged to avoid.
